Bungie’s Destiny 2 certainly made a huge announcement concerning a new campaign and a physical reward pin, but it seems that the audience is not really up for celebrating. The ‘Renegades’ campaign, a challenge for gamers to defeat the evil Barant Imperium, was tweeted by Destiny 2 and the option to buy a pin for Cassie as a reward was also included. However, players’ reactions have been mainly complaints about various issues such as the long-awaited PVP balance, reward RNG, server stability, and the condition of The Final Shape.
However, Bungie is still not celebrating their new story and cool merch while the players do not show any interest at all. They are like coming to a party in a new hat while their house is burning down. Everyone’s attention is on the fire. The tweets are a clear illustration of gamers voicing their complaints, ranging from that specific bug to the issue of the game’s future.
Let’s try to clarify this because, honestly, it is all quite confusing. The main event here is the ‘Renegades’ campaign activity and the pin that most probably will be the reward after you finish it and then purchase it from the Bungie Store. Typical Bungie Rewards stuff. But the comments section? A total mess. Player ‘David Kuzmanov’ makes a really great point by jumping straight to asking, ‘Are we gonna fix the final shape campaign?’ Wow, what a huge DLC; it is really unhelpful for a new seasonal pin thread to bring it up.
The PvP and reward problems are always a hot topic and come with issues of their own. User ‘I_Am_Excell’ puts it straight to Bungie if they can make a red crystal (probably a new cosmetic for the current ‘lightsaber’ swords) drop from flawless ‘Invasion’ completions one hundred percent of the time instead of making it random. They declare, ‘Locking it behind RNG is bullshit.’ Their stance is backed by ‘frogman3412’ (Jacob), who is so upset about the new ‘Renegade’ skills in the Invasion game mode that he writes it off as the ‘most pointless gamemode’ and he practically calls the instant-super powers and tank-like ‘walkers’ ‘Ridiculous.’ He concludes with the evergreen, ‘you fucked up once again.’
The PvP debate gets hotter. A user going by the name ‘DanWoods1717’ embarks on a rant that goes on for several tweets and reads like a manifesto. He discusses the unbalanced damage per second (DPS), brands PvP ‘Unfuck real’ and draws a very unfavorable comparison with The Division 2. He opposes the new ‘lightsaber’ swords and labels the Star Wars armor set as expensive since other sets are just plain ugly, and complains about the weapon balance. That’s really a lot and it sets off a discussion with ‘TheSaltyKing47’ who simply states, ‘What did you expect?’ attributing it to the fact that PvP has not been the main focus of the 90% PvE game during the last 11 years. ‘Thats like going to a Chinese restaurant and thinking they will make the greatest Mexican food,’ they quip. That’s… a take.
The player’s discontent is not only about mechanics but also comes with an underlying factor of fatigue. ‘Capcom_VS_Karl’ who claims to be a D1 alpha player says the ‘constant “pushing”, lack of decent pvp and general distress for players is exhausting.’ Ouch! That’s some pretty strong language there. Moreover, ‘frogman3412’ who is very negative in another thread wishes both ‘d3 and marathon both fail so bungie can shut down and call it quits.’ That is really bitter, possibly the person has been let down too many times.
The uproar notwithstanding, there are customers with very specific, albeit smaller, demands. ‘SwitchMrDuck’ proposes a fun idea of a hood ornament like another cosmetic set. On the other hand, ‘eth_iisan’ very straightforwardly and bluntly states, ‘Fix the servers.’ Sometimes, it is the little things. ‘myYouTubetrash’ posts a meme claiming their exotic. And ‘CurseOfCourage’ is the optimistic one; he gives a link to a Destiny 2 group-finding link. The link person is actually someone who wants to play the game.
So what is the moral to be extracted from the entire fuss? Destiny’s promotional cycle doesn’t stop and keeps going on with the unveiling of new pins and activities, on the other hand a vocal part of the community still feels locked in the past and they keep on raising the issues that they consider as fundamental. They talk about shattered storylines, disapproved PvP modes, unjustified reward systems, and server issues. The campaign pin announcement was more of a news deluge, highlighting the ongoing issues on platforms like PlayStation and Xbox.
