Warcraft III: Reforged has been quite the mystery as of late. The remaster was first announced back at BlizzCon 2018, promising a complete graphical rehaul and update of the entire game, including all four playable factions and all of the campaigns, up to The Frozen Throne expansion.

This more or less set the gaming community on fire. There aren’t many things that fans of the Warcraft universe have wanted more than a remaster of Warcraft III, and we’re finally getting it.

Right?

Back in September, we discussed this silence. By then, Blizzard had said incredibly little about the game ahead of the December 31st release deadline – which is still set. That silence was broken in November at BlizzCon 2019 where the Reforged team showed off some of the reworked graphics and units, as well as announcing the multiplayer beta that had practically already begun at the time.

When it came to a release date, though, things were relatively silent. The only thing anyone got was J. Allen Brack stating the most Blizzard of all terms: “Soon.”

So how soon is soon? Is that still somewhere in 2019? If you look at the Blizzard client, Warcraft III: Reforged is set to release on December 31st, 2019. With that New Year’s Eve deadline, why haven’t we heard anything about it? Surely if the game is releasing in this same month, we would have heard some sort of fanfare, some building of hype.

With no confirmation on the launch date and no real progress update outside of the things shown at BlizzCon, it seems that Warcraft III: Reforged is going to be pushed into 2020. As of writing this, we have no sort of rumored release date or quarter for next year, nor any confirmation that it won’t be coming out soon.

Blizzard has been remarkably silent on the project throughout the entire development. The Twitters for Diablo IV, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft are constantly pushing out new updates and news for followers. The Warcraft social media portals all remain relatively silent.

In fact, not counting retweets, they’ve only posted five times since January of this year – with three of those being announcements of esports events, an announcement for the multiplayer beta, and a retweet of the official Blizzard account’s highlight of the Warcraft III: Reforged panel at BlizzCon. This might sound like a silly thing to point out, but in today’s social media-driven news outlets, it’s a mighty notable thing to remain almost completely silent for an entire year of development – especially when that year was supposed to be your release.

So at this point, no one has a set release date for the highly anticipated remaster. Blizzard fans should cross their fingers and pray that 2020 sees us return to pre-WoW Azeroth once again.
