Obsidian Entertainment has made an assertive proclamation that their fantasy RPG Avowed is going to be accessible for PlayStation 5 with a February 17 release date. The launch corresponds with the Anniversary Update that comes with New Game Plus, new playable races, a new weapon type, a Photo Mode, among others. This has very much broadened the horizon of the game for Xbox and PC users and at the same time provided a considerable amount of content for both newly minted and experienced gamers.
So, basically, Avowed is now up for grabs for the PS5. It was high time! No, it is not merely an unconvincing port, in reality, rather an entire Anniversary Update is on its way to where the game is. That is, indeed, a highly significant matter, don’t you believe? I mean, you get the game plus a bundle of new stuff all in one go. New Game Plus is a sure sign of the game being highly replayable, and adding new races? Dwarves, orlan, and aumaua? These are going to impact the character builds for sure. Not to mention the new weapon type and Photo Mode. They are very serious about it.
But oh boy, what a different story reading the responses to the announcement tweet… it’s a whole mood. It appears the gaming community is uncertain whether it’s a celebration or a mourning among them. There are really super hyped people. For instance, RadpunkA actually yelled “YEEESSS all I’ve been waiting for! Can finally play it! 😄” which is similar to my feeling when I can finally play something that I’ve been wanting to play after all the waiting. And TimesweGame was very straightforward with their comment “Pretty hyped for this one.” Clear-cut, no frills, positive vibes.
Afterwards, the opposite side came up. Oh no! The “meh” people showed up and were really loud this time. Marionete04 said “Meh game tbh” and RamblingOnDeck declared “About as exciting as Redfall.” Ouch! That’s a low blow, dude. Even RockenVT remarked “No thanks, we don’t need mediocre games.” It certainly is a dichotomy, isn’t it? While some are discerning this as a second chance for a game they might have heard was rough, others are completely writing it off.
Another aspect of the story is the timing issue. SirSnipeyy made a very impactful Xbox comment, saying “Decently enjoyed it but literally Xbox could not hate their fans more. How many times are they going to release games at their worst to their primary playerbase and then drop complete bundled versions for PlayStation?” That’s a very similar feeling that a lot of Xbox players are having while watching games get fixed up and expanded just as they arrive on a rival console. It hurts. Ollywhite97 concurred, stating “This update could have happened much sooner, let’s not lie… They just waited for it to drop on PS first.” It surely raises the question about the strategy, doesn’t it? Is it smart business or is it kinda… you know… the other way around?
Moreover, there are the practical issues to take into account. ZigoSid shared a very relatable thought when he said: “New playable races could make me give it another try.” That is the true power strong post-launch support can have. It can actually bring players back to the game. However, then sanshugoel raised the very question that a lot of performance-minded gamers want to know: “Still no 60 FPS mode?” That is a really important one for a fast-paced action RPG. If it is still capped at 30, that will be a dealbreaker for a part of the PS5 audience who are used to smooth frames.
Some replies were totally out of control. Stikkilicious suggested “tainted grail: fall of avalon instead of this gey slop” which kicked off a mini-debate over which fantasy RPG is better, with Loddedin championing Avowed’s Pillars of Eternity setting. And then there’s all the… console war stuff. salehalmuhann simply stated “Xbox is dead confirmed this year 2026” which is, uh, a very bold prediction. And cjthenorthstar offered the most comedic yet cynical opinion: “It’s trash now that it’s coming to ps5. A few months ago it was a good game 🤣🤣🤣.” That is the gamer hive mind in a nutshell, right? The perception just shifts the moment the exclusivity does.
In the end, the release of Avowed for PS5 is a really big deal. It is not only a new platform but also a relaunch with a massive amount of new content that could attract a totally new audience.
