The official Apex Legends account published an odd teaser that left everyone trying to get their heads around it. Who might that Legend be? They circulated a video wherein they provided hints and also utilized a coffee cup emoji, implying to the gamers to be alert and to figure it out. Everything in the scenario was so difficult to understand that even the players’ community went on and tried to decipher it anyway.
Basically, the hints pointed towards Mad Maggie, which, to be honest, was a decision that many people considered shocking. One case in point is a gamer @IshyFishyDaBest, who said: ‘I don’t think anyone could have guessed that on the first try there is absolutely no clue about Maggie’s tea drinking?!?😭’ Of course, he was right—Maggie’s mad and ruthless leader from Salvo, who would hardly be drinking tea at noon. Still, maybe there was an encounter long ago when Horizon offered tea to Maggie and the latter accepted it? @hopelessboy234 remembered an old video with Horizon, Maggie, and Lifeline when Duardo was still around. So, it could be part of the canon but like, very much buried in the lore.
The replies were a super heterogeneous collection of different responses. While some deciphered it right away—@ChibiCorgi24 bragged ‘Got it on the first clue’ which like, wow, such a show-off. Most people, however, were having a hard time. @Swytchers even went as far as saying ‘So when tf does Maggie like tea? 😭’ which is indeed a valid feeling. And @LeotheLion25 confessed that he needed hints 4 and 5 to solve the puzzle, stating he was unaware that Maggie even liked tea unless they were referring to @Emaerya who purportedly drinks it daily.
Well, the whole tea controversy came up just when Maggie’s prestige skin event was happening. Thus, from the marketing viewpoint, the timing is perfect even if the tea thing seems really weird. @o_akinfenwa and @Swytchers were real discussions about whether Ballistic or Horizon were the actual tea lovers in the game’s universe since both those characters have stronger ties to and are more civilized in terms of beverage choice. With Maggie, seriously, you never know what her drink would be—maybe something… bombastic.
But then the conversation—again with Apex Twitter—is a balance of complaints and requests for features. @ThiSauce asked ‘Can you please, for God’s sake, put the Peacekeeper back in the care package?’ which led to a whole debate about weapon rotation. @Vileword_152 countered angrily ‘Definitely not! The PK was ground loot from the very start!’ and recommended the opposite—bringing back the Triple Take instead. @mufcparzival also appealed for the return of the Triple Take to ground loot, which means that clearly there are some strong feelings about the shotgun meta at the moment.
And the same goes for @jolly_smoke, who had a whole rollercoaster ride of emotions with Caustic, saying ‘Give Caustic back his passive! It’s literally his character. He shouldn’t take any damage at all from the gas.’ They got pretty intense and started pointing fingers at the recent balance changes, saying Caustic was worse off than Bang in terms of buff/nerf ratio. The passion behind these gameplay complaints always amazes the community—people really get to identify with their mains.
And of course, there will always be some haters like @WoHype711 who said ‘Your game is dying but yeah post some shit like that, it will bring back thousands of players 😂’ which is… brutal. @DanMashiach also expressed a similar lack of excitement, saying ‘Who cares? Focus on some real content for the game!’ as if character lore wasn’t content. But there are players like @FabianooGuarino who ask for a Sparrow version of this clue game, showing that some people really take pleasure in these little lore deep dives.
The community engagement in this case is really fascinating—Respawn gives out this obscure teaser and within hours players are combing through past interactions, debating character traits, and of course they are already throwing in their usual balance complaints. It’s like a miniature version of the ups and downs of Apex’s community; they are both frustrating and captivating. They are so interested that they are ready to get involved in these tiny mysteries, but at the same time can’t resist the urge to take any chance to complain about the game.
People’s opinions are quite amusingly divided as to whether the idea of Maggie being a tea drinker is sensible or not. @LikeToBeBossy remarked ‘I thought Maggie would be the type to drink coffee 😂’ which really is a much better fit for her character. Coffee gives you that burst, it has that intensity—tea seems too mellow for someone who’s basically an explosive walking. But who knows this might be the very point? Letting the savage side of the warlord shine through? Or perhaps it was just for the fun of it that the devs decided to play with people’s expectations.
This whole episode is reminiscent of battle royale communities’ trends where they cling onto the minutest of details and run with them. One ambiguous tweet and suddenly everyone is a lore expert arguing about the beverage preferences of made-up characters. This can be quite amazing, in fact. And so, despite the complaints that the ‘game is dying’ or something like that, the sheer number of interactions on this tweet demonstrates that people are still following, still caring about these characters beyond their gameplay mechanics.
Finally, it might be true that the question of whether Maggie drinks tea or not does not impact the gameplay in any way, still, it is these minor character details that contribute to the creation of the Outlands world. Even if the connection seems weak, it provides content creators and lore hunters something to play with in between seasons. And let’s be honest-in a game where you are mostly busy shooting at people, it is sometimes nice to have these lighter moments imagining which Legend drinks which hot beverage on PlayStation or Xbox.
