Respawn Entertainment resorted to community feedback through the recently released video which is the behind-the-scenes of the Mythic R-99 making, a new care package weapon that is now in the Apex Legends‘ Wildcard game mode. The players’ reactions were not very positive. The official social media account for Apex Legends unveiled a high-quality video illustrating the weapon’s creation with the caption “99 problems but this gun ain’t one 😎,” encouraging gamers to find it in Rampart’s combined Care Package drops. However, while the developers celebrated the new feature, the vast majority of users took to the comments section to express their dissatisfaction with the current state of the game.
So what exactly is this Mythic R-99? It is a mighty version of the well-known SMG now, giving one the impression of a unique model and perhaps altered stats as well, thus making it a very attractive gun in the limited-time Wildcard mode. One would not just find it by chance; there would be a need for sheer luck to get a Rampart-themed care package drop. The official video carries some very intriguing behind-the-scenes shots of the weapon’s design that some players are really enjoying. User ‘bradicu5’ did not hesitate to say, “it might be the best weapon skin I’ve ever seen,” and ‘kyfolam1’ commented, “I love bts videos. Keep it up!” So, the content, without a doubt, is winning praises.
On the other hand, the responses to this tweet tell a completely different story. It was as if the dam had burst and every unhappy Apex player descended on the site to voice their concerns. The main grievance? Matchmaking. It sounds like a broken record, but players are still very furious. User ‘khocker423’ entreated, “Can you fix matchmaking? My experience shouldn’t be to see multiple badged 3 stack master/pred/diamonds rolling gold 4 while my teammates won’t use abilities or shoot.” And there were many like him. A subsequent comment from the same user also dealt with the problem of playing against preds using smurf accounts and being teamed up with players who are likely “so scared they won’t even try fighting.” It is a view held by ‘T0XiK_ScRuB’ who called on the devs to “do something about players quitting mid game,” branding it a “terrible thing for players to experience.”
Now we come to the cheating issue. Oh boy, the cheating issue. It seems to be getting worse rather than better. ‘OjibweTaino’ narrated a rough ranked matchmaking experience: “First game of ranked played and got smoked by a 0 recoil guy then watched him kill 9 more people until he got killed by another script user. Your ‘security’ team is completely fucked. Or just useless.” And if that was not enough, ‘Haxnteee’ basically trolling the developers, boasting, “i’ve been rage hacking for bout 15 months on 1 account and yall have yet to ban it LMAO.” That is just… yikes. It is not a good look when players feel that powerful.
An important issue that impacts the gameplay significantly is server problems and performance. ‘tragicmistakez’ simply asked, “Fix the frame drops an server issues,” whereas ‘rjckE_’ humorously asked, “Please upload a video on how you fix the servers.” It is evident that for a lot of players, the very core of the game is still not up to standard, and the addition of fancy new weapons does not matter if the game is stuttering or lagging.
Furthermore, even the new Mythic R-99 itself was directly critiqued. ‘POPN_WAKABA_vv’, who seems to be a mouse and keyboard player, raised a potential imbalance issue: “The poor handling of this weapon and the large and fast spread make it more difficult than expected for K&M players. Will there be any changes to make it easier for K&M players to use?” And ‘cjamlol’ lightened up the situation saying, “no i think an SMG shooting missiles IS the problem,” ridiculing the weapon’s power. ‘RobT75UK’ even mentioned “(It’s kinda ruining Wildcard mode),” hinting that its dominance might upset the harmony of the new LTM.
Amidst all this uproar were also random appeals and bug notifications. ‘SirFowlerr’ called for more esports org banners and skins, ‘jolly_smoke’ recounted the new glitch with Caustic’s traps, and ‘OgScran’ lamented his inability to buy epic skins with crafting metals anymore. And the words ‘ServantRick’ sad “Still no titan fall 3” are all that one needs to bring up an Apex controversy without someone mentioning Titanfall.
So what is the final takeaway? Respawn has been developing games for various platforms including PlayStation and Xbox.
