Once again, Xûr, that mysterious weekend vendor of Destiny 2, is out with another forage exotic weapon, the Slayer’s Fang, his purchase. The announcement went forth on Bungie’s official tweeter account, provoking cheers and groans from the Guardians. Strange Coins; that seems to be the asking price, and yet there seems to be lots of complaining about it.
What went wrong? The Slayer’s Fang was once an intense dungeon seasonal quest in Destiny 2, where players had to grind through missions and all sorts of challenges to unlock it. Now Xûr simply gives it out and that feels like an achievement lost for some. Another Guardian, @banana_dxvilan, gave it very plainly: “So you telling me I did all that work for Slayer’s Fang just for Xûr to sell it at the end of the season??” Ouch!
Here’s the real kicker: Buying from Xûr doesn’t mean getting the full deal. This version he’s selling is the base model: No perks at all, no catalyst, no upgrades. You still have to get your hands dirty for the good stuff. In the words of @timmyboopd, “It’s just an objectively worse version.” In other words, it doesn’t outright cancel out the grind…but if you made it early, it stings.”
Some aren’t raising a ruckus at all. Players like @Marvin5367 are just happy to land themselves one without any stress. “I snagged one today. It’s pretty sweet,” he bragged on Twitter. For the new guards or punchers in town who missed the season, the opportunity is ripe to grab a weapon they may have totally ignored.
Another question is- Should Xûr even be selling dungeon exotics? Some of the Guardians feel that rare drops should indeed stay rare and some just want them to acquire a tad easier. “Have him sell Anarchy too, fuck it,” laughed @yungmugel. But Bungie is the one always trying to walk that fine line between accessibility and rewarding dedication, and this particular claw is definitely leaning towards accessibility.
The Destiny 2 community is still in a boil over the sale of the Choir of One skin that occurred last week. It’s clear that Bungie is testing the waters for the vendor here, and whether that will be an uphill or downhill will be split right in the middle.
Then, should you go for Slayer’s Fang at Xûr? If you’re looking to add it to your collection or just want it on your hands a little before grinding for it, go for it. Otherwise, for the full experience, back into those quests you must go. The debate is well underway whichever way, and with the Season of the Wish closing in, it probably won’t be the last controversial action Bungie takes.
Meanwhile, coming up to Xûr’s next reset will give time for the Guardians to decide. What say you? Go for it or hard pass? Either way, a busy weekend is in store in the Tower.
