Ubisoft has kicked off a free holiday gift reveal for the gamers who play Assassin’s Creed Shadows, wherein the gratis in-game assets will be available to be obtained every day from a chest in the user’s Hideout until the 25th of December. The amazing gifting campaign is trying to maintain the community’s interest during the festive season, though it is true that some players have been taking the opportunity of announcements to vocalize their general demands and criticisms regarding the game series.

Ubisoft has, indeed, been very good to the whole Assassins by gifting them a holiday treat, and if I have to be honest? It is a really cool move on their part. They made a tweet suggesting that for the daily gift until Christmas everyone should go to their Hideout in Assassin’s Creed Shadows from now on every single day. Why? Because the chest is there and it is full of FREE GOODIES. And you know what? The best part is that the items change every day. So, it’s like a mini digital advent calendar, just picture that instead of chocolate, it is probably some cool gear or resources that you can claim, unless the chocolate is a new consumable item, which would certainly be comical.

This is a classic holiday community engagement tactic by a big video game publisher. Encourage players to log in every day, keep the game in their minds, and give them a little joy. In addition, free stuff is free stuff, right? One cannot really complain about that. The original post got a ton of responses, and the reaction was… well, it was quite mixed, which is absolutely normal for the Assassin’s Creed community in these times.

Many gamers were very excited. For instance, Tyler (@LoneShinobi_17) was very quick to say that he got his and thanks the team for their relentless support. Another gamer Adam Thompson (@AdamTho88718953) even sent a very nice note back. How cheerful is that? At the same time, there were people like 𝔄mirul 𝔄syraf (@AmrvlxAsyraf) who shared a very beautiful DIY wall clock he made counting down to Shadows, which is super fandom. Duke Favre (@DukeFavre) said it was lovely and to be honest, so did we. That is the nice side of gaming communities.

But wait, what was I saying? Oh yeah, the answers. So you just keep scrolling down and a little more and, as expected, the post has more or less turned into a suggestion box—or more precisely a complaint department—for the whole Assassin’s Creed franchise. Players behaved as if they saw the word “Ubisoft” and just let loose all the demands that had been pent up for years.

The biggest problem? New Game Plus for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Several comments, like those of Billy (@SoulsofMystery) and Milktub69 (@Milktub69), just plainly stated that the release of the new NG+ patch would be the best Christmas gift. This is a long and requested feature from the developers, which has been echoed by players each time they get a chance. The patch for 4K/60fps for Assassin’s Creed Unity was another one of the very popular requests, with Tommaso R (@DERPHERPDERPYO) pointing out that it is the only major title that hasn’t been upgraded to next-gen. That is a really deep-cut request of the dedicated fanbase.

Then there were those asking about the content in the comments. Timothy Davis (@Timothy82052570) was wondering what happened to a rumored second expansion for Shadows and stated that the current minor updates are nothing. Others such as noname (@cstrike105) confessed that the free items are nice but they would like more missions and DLC to really be able to make the best use of them. And, of course, you cannot have an AC thread without remake rumors. Bryan (@W1218N) appeared to ask, “When can we expect the leak on black flag remake?” Because that rumor just doesn’t seem to go away.

And then… the comments from the other side of the spectrum. The purest and the most direct salt. Some comments were downright rude. JuiceCrunch (@JuiceCrunch) went on a lengthy tirade calling the rewards “mobile zoomer slop” and wistfully wishing, “Remember when assassin’s creed was a video game?” That hurts. Lucas Suarez (@Lutsurugi) wondered if the company was trying hard to be relevant and dubbed the case “pathetic.” HM Gaming Station (@hmgamesnsoftwa1) simply announced that they had already uninstalled the game. And Raymond Taylor (@TheTankBall) made it clear that he was waiting for Ubisoft to be sold to another company. The argument is definitely not a dull one.

There were also some practical questions. Alexander M. (@MannMang) and other players on PlayStation and Xbox platforms wondered about cross-progression features.
