Whoa. All right, now it showed up for me. Ubisoft did a shadow drop on the new Prince of Persia title, just like in 2013. The Rogue Prince of Persia is OPEN right now. No forewarnings, no months of hype-drum-beating, just bam-game-go-play. Available through Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and on PC. And then later this year for Nintendo Switch and… hold your breath for a bit… Nintendo Switch 2. Yep, casually confirming Switch 2’s existence. Wild, I know.
What is the game supposed to be about, then? The Rogue Prince of Persia appears to be a stylized action roguelike-style game based on what the trailer had to show us. The art style just screams Samurai Jack vibes, which, for me, is always a plus. The general premise seems to be something along the lines of “try to save Persia, but it’s like… keep dying… start all over again?” So “rewrite fate.” Or die trying. Which, most probably, you will a lot.
The announcement itself has thrusted this game into a million reactions and different ranging emotions already. Some are excited about the announcement! One user said, “What a nice surprise!” Exactly. Then another one says, “I need it” which I honestly feel. But it is divided all the way down into the other half; this of course, being gaming Twitter.
Some are… not pleased. Like there’s this entire bunch of players begging for a Sands of Time remake as opposed to this. One guy actually went as far as saying “WE WANT THE REMAKE of Sands of time. Not this nonsense. Stop wasting our time.” Owch. That haunts me. Then one other person is complaining about the price: “For a game like that.. it’s really expensive” which is interesting because it’s on Game Pass, so basically… It’s included? Unless of course, they’re referring to standalone purchase.
Here’s a few more: One person thought it would be appropriate to label it “Prince of Soy” and “woke modern slop,” okay-okay. Another account replied to the announcement with “Where is splinter cell remake announcement please,” of course. And I of course own the above-personal-favorite-screaming-moment where someone screams, “GIVE US A NEW TRIALS GAME PLEASE,” as if Ubisoft is going to pop it out any day now.
But amidst the chaos, there are some really positive comments as well. One player who bought the game says, “Nice. I bought this game near release since it didn’t include Denuvo, and I have had a blast with it. I’m glad people on other platforms get to enjoy it as well now.” That’s nice. Actual helpful knowledge about no Denuvo will be appreciated by the PC players.
That’s got to be the biggest news here- Nintendo Switch 2 mention. Ubisoft just casually confirmed the existence of Nintendo’s next console right in a game announcement. No big press event, no fancy reveal, just “coming to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.” Not on my bingo card today, that Switch 2 confirmation via Prince of Persia tweet.
Also can we talk about the title? The Rogue Prince of Persia. Sounds cool honestly. Makes me think it’s gonna be more fast-paced and action-focused than some of the previous games. The trailer shows this prince guy doing all these acrobatic moves and combat that looks pretty smooth. Definitely has that roguelike vibe where you run through areas, get powerups, die, repeat.
What’s interesting is this is the second Prince of Persia game we’ve gotten recently after The Lost Crown. Ubisoft is really pushing the franchise again they said, which is cool to see. Even if some players are complaining about wanting the old style third-person games instead. Like one person said “Third person action Prince of Persia when,” followed by a crying emoji. I feel you buddy but also maybe try this new thing?
The Game Pass inclusion is massive though. Day one on Game Pass means millions of players can just jump in and try it without spending extra money. That’s always a win. Though one player did complain, “Why do your Pc game pass games never unlock Xbox achievements? No one cares about Ubi Connect trophies.” Fair point actually. Achievement hunters want their points.
Overall, this is a pretty exciting surprise drop. In an era where games get announced years in advance and then delayed multiple times, getting a “available right now” announcement is refreshing. The reactions are mixed as always but that’s gaming Twitter for you. Some people will never be happy no matter what you do.
The game itself looks fun from the trailer – colorful, fast action, cool art style. The roguelike elements could make it really replayable. And being on Game Pass means there’s basically no reason not to at least try it. Unless you’re waiting for the Switch 2 version I guess. Which now we know is actually coming. Thanks Ubisoft for confirming that I guess.
So yeah, if you’ve got Game Pass or just want a new action game, The Rogue Prince of Persia is waiting for you right now. Go rewrite some fate or die trying. Probably both. Multiple times. Because roguelike.
