To put it another way, it seems like The Weeknd doesn’t have acting in his destiny as the case is. Not even a little bit. This appears to be the main point coming out of the now-famous tweet that has circulated among the gaming twitter accounts. SwagKirb just shared a movie still with the caption “This acting vro” and to be fair? The internet was really in agreement. To a very large extent.
The Weeknd is shown in the clip (actually, his birth name is Abel Tesfaye) going through some hard moments. He is so loud that the high pitch of his voice sounds a bit… zesty as one of the users describes it. JPark088 laughingly said “Sound zesty asf 🤣” and honestly that could be the most accurate description I’ve ever heard.
On the other hand, gamers have been very rude with their comments. For example, PercReynolds, seemingly trying to be nice instead, said” This is okay he just has a light ass voice” while another user named AlMax45744446 slammed in with the killer “He can’t sing either.” Whoa! That was rather harsh to hear.
The whole thing is very funny when people are so divided. Some even defending my lead character Abel. A user with the nickname adrian_anima thought “It is not as awful as people proclaim it to be. The only problematic part was just the beginning; afterwards, it feels like you are actually in a heated conversation.” However, the other side of the story is represented by the user VIXXXENDOTCOM who is calling it “tubi ass acting,” a statement that probably is the strongest critique I have come across this week.
Some of the users with sharp eyes have pointed out the movie being referred to as “Hurry Up Tomorrow.” Abel will be the character name of The Weeknd in this film. Not very creative? One comment from ‘grok’ provided that piece of information into the thread, so he deserves to be credited for doing the research that I was too lazy to do.
It is really astonishing how many people are actually mentioning his past acting roles. For example, ‘selchumm’ just commented “The Idol too…💔” along with that broken heart emoji and to be honest? That is the mood indeed. HBO’s release was… a different universe altogether. Nor was it a producer of the acting awards for him.
One of the most hilarious things today might be the way some people are associating it to his Canadian origins. BLKGLFNKS bluntly states “Yall be forgetting he’s Canadian” as if that solves everything. Godslovep also contributed “He is not a bad actor — he is just light-skinned and from Toronto.” I mean… do we really want to use this as the excuse?
I found a few such comments quite amusing. Duck____e pointed out “it sounds like he’s recording an apology video” and that is so particular while being accurate at the same time. Sofbit simply referred to the clip with “shut the fuck up!!! 💅” and used the nail-painting emoji for emphasis. The level of detail in these roasts is just incredible.
Even SwagKirb himself came back with a follow-up comment that was surprisingly measured? He said, “The Weeknd is a magnificent musician, but his acting really stinks, and he should only be cast as a comic actor going forward. At least this movie is better than war of the worlds but not by much.” So he acknowledges the musical talent while simultaneously scorching the acting skills. Seems fair to me.
Interestingly, there are quite a few people who have the same view as the movie itself, but they say the acting is dubious nonetheless. Miguel_G_2015 expressed “lowkey movie wasn’t that bad but hey that’s probably because im a dick rider lol” which at least shows a very honest self-awareness. We stan an honest king.
The funniest interaction might be when PrimeShotgun simply asked “Who the fuck casted these two?” like being genuinely puzzled at the casting choices. And BDKnighton1 asked “Does he literally just scream at a baddie for the whole movie?” which… from the clip, maybe?
Others have been getting meta about it too. TheUnknownMando inquired “To be fair in this movie, isn’t it Plausible because he’s playing the hyper fictionalized version of himself?” which is a fair point I guess? If you’re portraying an exaggerated version of yourself, bad acting could actually be good acting? My brain hurts when I try to think about this.
The absolute best part though is the number of people who make fun of Jenna Ortega’s reaction in that particular scene. plastixine mentioned “jenna was crying because of abel’s poor acting 😔 and jeidikavinsky added “jenna be like tryna hold her laugh the whole time i know she did.” Like just imagine being such an awful actor that you cause your co-star to lose character just due to cringe.
Honestly, though, at the end of the day, The Weeknd is still producing some of the best music out there, so perhaps he should just do what he does best? Not everyone has to be a multi-hyphenate. Sometimes just being extraordinarily talented at one thing is enough. But hey, at least he’s experimenting with new things, even if the new ones involve him yelling in a kind of zesty voice like that of a person filming an apology.
The verdict, however, has been pronounced by the gaming community: Maybe it is best to leave the acting to the actors, Abel. Your music will still be streamed but maybe it would be better to skip your next movie role. Unless it is a comedy, apparently, since according to SwagKirb that is where he might actually shine. Who knows, maybe we will see The Weeknd in a buddy cop comedy next. Actually, wait, that might be kind of amazing. Never mind, I take it all back.
