The Outer Worlds has been a pretty successful action role-playing game all around from the people at Obsidian. The developer created an intriguing world, with limitless possibilities and content.
They also did a good job with the writing. There is a lot of dark humor and satire that you’ll notice within the game’s first couple of opening sequences. These elements definitely give The Outer Worlds a unique flare that sets it apart from other RPGs in the same space.
The writing was so good — in fact — that the game just received a Nebula Award in the game writing category. It’s an impressive feat that Obsidian should hold in high regard.
If you don’t know, the Nebula Awards are held every year and they’re a way to spotlight the work of science fiction and fantasy writers of America. The Outer Worlds beat out some stiff competition too, including Disco Elysium.
This recent accomplishment just shows how good the writing and story lines are in this game. When you’re not completing the main story centered around corporate control, there are a lot of side quests that keep the humor going strong.
Obsidian has given you plenty of ways to approach gameplay too just like what they’ve done in their previous games. This design opens up the story possibilities and makes you care more about what happens.
For instance, you can be a scumbag all throughout the game taking out whoever you please. Or, you can play the straight and narrow path and build meaningful relationships that pay off later on.
The Outer Worlds is about discovery and exploration in a way that was captured beautifully by the developer. It may not go down as one of the best RPGs ever, but in various departments, there are layers of exciting content that make hours fly right by.
The six companion characters included also highlight a lot of the satire. They give situations more personality and that ultimately immerses you in the worlds and lore even more.
If you haven’t yet experienced all that The Outer Worlds has to offer, there’s no better time than now. What starts off as a mysterious adventure will quickly transform into a humorous and memorable story that you’ll find yourself coming back to time and time again.
Obsidian deserves a ton of praise for their attention to detail with this game. They’re rightfully deserving of this most recent Nebula award.
