The 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. continues to be celebrated through Super Mario Bros. 35, a free online multiplayer game released for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
This 35-player game dropped earlier this month, creating a battle royal type contest wherein players race through classic Super Mario Bros. stages. The game has become a popular freebie on the Switch, but Nintendo is sweetening the pot with a special limited time event for Halloween.

The Halloween Spectacle, as it is called, is promising a spooky experience, or at least as spooky as things can get in the Mario games. The event is going to compile eight dark levels from the original Super Mario Bros. starting with level 1-2, which is the first underground stage. There will also be levels from stages 3 and 6, as all of these take place in front of a black background.
While you’re not going to see added elements like Jack-O-Lanterns and Halloween specific things such as that, Nintendo is still pulling out as many stops as possible to make this as spooktacular an event as possible.

It’s also going to have limited availability. The event started this morning at 12 noon, and will continue until 10:59 PDT on November 1. That means you have three full days to play through this special battle, encompassing the whole of Halloween weekend.
As the COVID-19 pandemic surges on, many are looking for alternative themed indoor fun, and this event might be something that hits the right note for anyone upset that they can’t go out to parties of trick-or-treating.
“A spooky good Special Battle is on the horizon in Super Mario Bros. 35,” Nintendo of America said, announcing the special event on the company’s official Twitter account. “Grab your 100 coins to start the match, but make sure you’re not afraid of the dark.”
As the tweet confirms, players will start this challenge with 100 coins, before making their way through Courses 1-2, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 4-2, 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3.

Nintendo has been putting a lot of effort into the 35th anniversary of Super Mario. The company also released Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which is a special collection game that compiles three of Mario’s first 3D adventures. This includes Super Mario 64 from the Nintendo 64, Super Mario Sunshine from the Nintendo GameCube, and Super Mario Galaxy from the Nintendo Wii.
Both Super Mario Bros. 35 and Super Mario 3D All-Stars are only available for a limited time. In a surprising move, Nintendo has announced that it will stop providing both games at the end of March 2021.
