The official reveal trailer just launched for Star Wars: Squadrons, and it comes with the extra details that this a first-person multiplayer dogfighting game set at the end of the Galactic Civil War. Star Wars fans rejoice.
Star Wars: Squadrons will come to PC on October 2nd, across Origin, Steam, and Epic Games Store. The game will also be available on consoles, with PSVR support and cross-play support enabled.
Star Wars: Squadrons allows players to compete in competitive 5v5 dogfights or take part in a much larger-scale fleet battle. This sort of gameplay has been seriously missing from the Star Wars games, as both Battlefronts had fairly poor showing for space combat.
Long-time fans of the franchise might remember the old Star Wars: Starfighter games, the original releasing way back in 2001. Squadrons looks to be the first game in a long time that is putting its focus entirely on Star Wars space combat.
Players will be able to choose ships from both sides of the conflict, featuring iconic vehicles from the New Republic and the Imperial Fleet. Yes, that means the X-wing and the TIE Fighter.
Fans of the Star Wars games will also be glad to hear that this is described as a “fully self-contained experience” where you play to earn rewards. It’s still likely there will be cosmetic microtransactions, but the base path of progression won’t be hidden behind a paywall.
Star Wars Squadrons appears to be mainly multiplayer, but there will also be a single-player campaign focused on the final events of the Galactic Civil War. How long or involved this campaign is yet to be seen.
This trailer also revealed nothing of the gameplay but has put a big focus on the VR-ready capabilities from launch for the PC. Players will be able to sit inside the cockpit of a TIE Fighter and navigate the controls from inside. VR will also be available on PlayStation VR.
More details will be launched on June 18th as EA continues to release more news about their upcoming games for next-gen consoles and into the 2020 holiday period.
