A worldwide State of Play was slated for tomorrow, and quite rightly, a certain sense of chaos erupted in the online gaming scenario. The tweet promised a State of Play with updates on upcoming PS5 games, but the social media peopling created an avalanche of mixed reactions filled with hype, doubt, and some downright strange requests.
So it’s another State of Play. It’s always a bit of a mixed bag, yeah? Sometimes it’s just great stuff, like a first look at Wolverine, and then sometimes it devolves into 20 minutes of marketing for a mobile game. The tweet itself was very much cut and dry, consisting only of a simple announcement and a link. The replies, though. The replies-the real fun is already starting.
The mood is fluid. They’ve got the usual haters from day one. One user, mewztwo, said bluntly, “No one gives a shit about PlayStation.” Cool, cool; that’s boosterism for you. Another one, Kingoflonely1, warned everyone: “Don’t get hype…. Another disaster event coming.” It’s like some have the clown makeup pre-applied just waiting for disappointment.
Then come hope and optimism. Bloodborne goes around as a sacred chant, when everyone well informed knows that it is not going to happen. User ozzyolias is simply spot on: “Clown makeup on, it’s time to expect Bloodborne again.” Bloodborne remains that beautiful-but-tragic hope and despair cycle for the entire Soulsborne community. Another comment said something about “Bloodborne kart,” which I would totally play in all honesty.
So unsurprisingly, the most demanded announcement is definitely Marvel’s Wolverine. The Insomniac game saw a reveal eons ago, and now we’ve barely occasioned even a mere tease of it. Users KevinJulynG and MorrisAlmighty2 just want a little info; in fact, Morris says simply, “Need Wolverine news.” I’m with ya, buddy. That game has so much potential, and the silence is killing people. Also, ThatDankCheese1 has mentioned Aces of Thunder for some possible release date, so clearly, there are people asking for news on other titles beyond the usual biggies.
There is also a weird platform-war undercurrent. User GIN_XSX was joking whether they would announce “Spiderman on Xbox?” just to stir the pot. Then another, NoneUnderme, speculated on Sony announcing that only “four games” would come to Xbox. Mostly in jest, but it is clear how tribal folks will get over their plastic boxes of choice.
There are already some players thinking of what they don’t want to see. Well, user g_stanczak made a good point about Ghost of Yotei, which comes out like next week. “I hope they don’t talk about Ghost of Yotei… Save the 35 minutes for stuff we don’t know about.” That is exactly how I see it-too bad to waste precious event time for a game that’s basically advertised to death. Give us the new stuff; give us the unknown; give us some surprises.
Amongst the wildcards are some of the comments. User ExoDieVerbotene dreams of an FFXIII trilogy remaster, admitting “I know it won’t happen, but I can dream.” kingdom_frogs, meanwhile, railed for a “GOD OF WAR 2.5D SPINOFF.” ChapinGeek then laid out predictions for “Resident Evil Requiem” and “Lobezno/Wolverine.” A perfect reminder that player interests really run the gamut.
Not everyone will be watching it, of course. Tru_Racer_YTTec commented, “I’ll just wait for the highlights on a YouTube shorts,” which has to be the smartest move if one’s patience is really short for corporate presentations. With the cynicism running deep, TechieRon writes a whole fake summary predicting, “No new games, and oh, hey, we’re releasing one remake of an old game, censored to shit.” Harsh, but you can’t say that it doesn’t sound plausible based on some past events.
The Sony gig, then, is still weighted with expectation. They want big announcements, exclusives, and a feeling that their loyalty to the platform has been very richly rewarded. The sheer volume and variety of things people want are incomprehensible; some want Wolverine, some want Bloodborne, and others just want to see Sony fail. What a circus.
So, what can we expect? Who knows? That’s the funny bit and also the frustrating bit. Probably that Wolverine trailer will finally grace us with its presence. Possibly the Shadow of the Erdtree release date surprise. Or maybe it’ll be 30 minutes of Concord. Pretty much anything can happen in a State of Play. The day before will remain the bright lands of pure speculation fuelled by memes and trauma from the past.
What is 100% certain is that tomorrow belongs to the gaming community. As for those past events-the bombshell multimillion sponsorship-spend gaming-industry announcements-Sony-uninterested players taking their time. Some will suddenly gulp at the warning of a meltdown, whose popcorn bucket is about to spill. We’ll just say that brings back good vibes; it’ll be… famous ploy. My roadworthy desire: Surely, this means something; finally, something blatantly out of the blue. Is that too much to ask? Probably. But a gamer can dream. We’ll find out really soon.
