Hold on tight, fellow gamers, because this is a hefty one. Sony has launched a legal nuke against Tencent for allegedly copycatting the entire vibe of Horizon into their game “Light of Moritam.” And with “copycat,” we are talking: gameplay mechanics, story themes, artistic elements-well, really everything except the very Aloy tattoos.
Here is the lawsuit. Into corporate drama and legal lingo? Then we definitely recommend you check it out because it so blatantly states that the makers of “Light of Moritam” took everything even faintly resembling a Horizon and dumped it into a game you would find in some shady, back-alley store. Mechanics are identical, themes almost shadow Sun, even artistic choices-ahem-suspiciously familiar. Sony is having none of it. And after having glanced at some of these comparisons? Man; I really feel the matter needs to be argued.
Then the real drama begins. Tencent is not some indie company-and they are ones that own Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and have investments in Epic Games (Fortnite, Unreal Engine). So, Sony is not battling some random little studio; they are targeting one of the industry’s big names. Very rash decision, indeed.
Now, moving into the chaos of reactions on Twitter, as always, the internet barely waits to have its opinions. Some gamers are backing Sony with the obvious similarities in view. One user, @Corey_Sartori, quite simply said, “First thing I thought when I saw this game was Sony gonna try and do something 😅. Looks ridiculously similar lol.” On the other hand, others mock Sony for even trying: @douglas_peay tweeted, “Sony needs to stay the fuck away from a court room. They are batting 0% wins.” Ouch.
Then comes the whole argument of “Sony does copying too!” which, you know, fair enough, but that really isn’t even the point. User @linkszxx went with the clever jab, “Sony the kings of ripping off others baby rages when it happens to them,” alongside a pretty relevant meme. Classic Twitter.
Let’s not leave the lawyers out of this! @Shanoobis, playing devil’s advocate, withholding an argument that Tencent may claim they were not in direct competition as the game was not on PlayStation. Then @Shinobi602 (who first broke the news) responded with, “This is about copyright infringement, not competition.” Mic drop.
There was also @UndeadMunch giving his input about Light of Moritam possibly copying a little from Destiny, which is even funnier since Sony now owns Bungie. Double story? Triple? Who knows.
The bigger question: what happens now? Probably the most busiest bunch at the moment, Tencent’s lawyers, and Sony has a reputation for acting quite aggressively in defending its IP. You remember Palworld-vs-Pokémon drama? No? This one will get messy.
On the bright side, gamers are feasting on this story. Whether you think Sony’s justified or just being petty, this lawsuit will be huge. If Tencent indeed copied Horizon, let’s just say “Light of Moritam” is going to need a heavy rebranding. New gameplay loop. And might I say art direction too.
So, folks, get yourself some popcorn. These legal showdowns will prove to be more fun than most of this year’s games.
