Such news hits hard, and with due grief I share the news: The actor Graham Greene, who portrayed Rains Fall in Red Dead Redemption 2, has passed away at 73. The Game Awards The Red Dead community has flooded discord, and the gaming world has exploded.
The Wapiti’s Rains Fall was the chief and possibly the most righteous figure in the Red Dead story. His interactions with Arthur Morgan were some of the best in a game full of wonderful moments. People are sharing old memories of video games while slowly absorbing the news.
Greene’s work extends far beyond RDR2, as he maintained an impressive career in television and film. I do remember someone writing, “I think he’s had more roles than half of Hollywood put together … He’s leaving a huge void.” From memory, I do recall that he was in Defiance and even had a role in Twilight as Harry Clearwater. His South Greene work, unlike any other, is extensive.
People are sharing their thoughts, but no one is indifferent to this news. While others recall old good times, like the man who said he was “going ginseng picking in his honour” (a reference to an RDR2 herb gathering mission that is cherished), others are quoting the game with “may he stand unshaken,” which makes me immerse myself in the emotion.
Some gamers are complaining that Rockstar Games have not commented on this? Like, one of the comments goes like “@RockstarGames not even a post?” which is out of the ordinary if they have not said it publicly. I would imagine that the company would want to celebrate an actor’s life who for so many years contributed to one of their beloved games.
Within the RDR2 plot, Rains Fall’s character was truly overlooked. He was the voice of reason and the old way of survival as the ancient Wild West was drawing to a close. Helping his tribe with the missions was the most well thought out content in the game, as it offered a unique perspective that is much less common in Western stories. While this is an oversimplification, as one person said, Rockstar “gave the Native Americans one of the coolest missions in RDR2,” and I can wholeheartedly endorse that statement.
Isn’t it striking how a game can create deep memories? Greene’s significant contribution to the game truly brought Rains Fall to life in a single voice and character portrayal. It is astounding how deeply the voice’s serene, calm tone was ingrained to the character and ensured that the character was truly heard. The game is full of screaming and gunfire, but the scenes with Greene were like tranquil interludes. Players recollect the many memories of Greene talking with Arthur, and how, with Greene, they were able to understand strawberry better, and it later facilitated Arthur’s redemption, which is told in the game.
The full gaming community is ‘showing the love’. The replies are a barrage of “RIP” messages and heart emojis accompanied by people sharing his works’ and Greene’s memories. It is a continuous reality check that there are actual people behind those virtual loved characters, and many players liked Greene for his work.
The most astounding part of Red Dead Redemption 2 was the myriad of experiences and perspectives of the changing world, and Greene’s capture of Rains Fall made the game even more special. Remember, it wasn’t just ‘the cowboy’ game like some people may throw it around.
Therefore, I wish to extend my condolences to Graham Greene. A remarkable actor has departed, making his mark with a supporting video game character. Greene’s role as Rains Fall from Red Dead Redemption 2 will be eternally cherished. His work can be appreciated for the first, fifth, or countless other times.
