Razer made an all-new Pokémon-themed throwback collection featuring the old Kanto starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, and, of course, Pikachu. The collection includes the BlackWidow V4 X keyboard, Kraken V4 X headset, Cobra mouse, and Gigantus V2 mousepad. Some players felt that this was an opportunity wasted to shine.
The collection is now available online on Razer’s official site. Reactions? Mixed. Very mixed. While quite a few gamers could not have been happier and Norah K Woods termed it “awesome 😎🤩,” Leah was “obsessed” with it. However, a bifurcated group emerged—many gamers have grown tired of the unending Gen 1 love. One disgruntled fan wondered aloud, “Why always the Kanto Pokémon?” At the same time, another thought the design to be “lackluster” compared to what the Asian branch has gotten in earlier drops.
And here comes a real Gengar moment: Numerous comments clamored for the ghost-type antagonist’s inclusion in merchandise, with one comment even tagging Pokémon: “RELEASE GENGAR IN AMERICAAAA.” Razer’s response to the color options was a disappointing “not for now.” Oof.
More unhappy words flowed: “The design looks lazy; they just slapped the same design on everything,” one said, while another added that the promo video actually looked better than the product pictures. And I am sure there had to be at least one Digimon fan throwing some shade, suggesting that Razer should have shrieked about a collaboration with Bandai Namco instead.
Anyway, some were down with it. A couple of lucky shoppers managed to get early bits when the page went live early. A fan over in Japan could scarcely contain excitement and tweeted (translated), “I couldn’t believe the good news..!! Kawaii!!”
So yeah. If you’ve been lining up for that Pikachu keyboard or a Charmander mousepad, talk about today really being your day. But if you were looking for some scent beyond that stale Gen 1 nostalgia? Then keep on hanging there. Or, as one player put it: “Greaat, gotta go third-party seller from China for the good stuff once again.”
Usually, when it comes to collaborations, Razer has its decent moments, but this one split the community right in half. Maybe next time, they could consider mixing in a couple of Johto or Galar representatives. Or, you know, finally gimme some Gengar spotlight. Until then, the OG Kanto crew is king—whether the gamers like it or not.
And the mouse does look good! A win, no doubt.
