Netflix has gained massive attention lately from gamers, thanks to the well-received live-action adaptation of The Witcher. While the series is based on the original novels by Andrzej Sapkowski and not the games from CD Projekt Red, the streaming platform is receiving attention again.

Netflix has also announced they’re bringing another video game movie, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back — Evolution, to the platform next month.

Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back — Evolution was released in Japan in July 2019. The film was made completely in 3D and starred the anime adaptation protagonist Ash Ketchum.

The movie description from Netflix states: “When researchers discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, they unleash a creation that goes against the very laws of nature. The Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo was intended for use as a tool of destruction. But as Mewtwo becomes aware of its own dubious origin, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge…”

The new film will also bring back fan-favorite characters, and gym leaders, Brock and Misty, who appeared in the first season of the tv show. The characters have only made small appearances in the anime adaptation and video games. With Ash returning to his home region in the newest Pokémon series, it’s no surprise that the filmmakers brought back Ash’s friends and travelmates.

The film is a reimagining of Pokémon: The First Movie, which aired in North American movie theaters in 1999. It was not only popular within the US but also in Japan.

Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back — Evolution did debut in North America shortly after its release in Japan, but only in a limited capacity. It debuted Anime Expo 2019 in Los Angeles, CA, but other fans in the country haven’t yet had the opportunity to watch the film until now.

Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back — Evolution will debut on Netflix as a “Netflix Original” worldwide, except for in Japan and Korea. It will be the first film in the franchise to debut on a streaming platform in North America.

It’s unknown how long the movie will remain on the platform since Netflix often switches out content as licenses expire, and new content airs.

Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back — Evolution will launch on Netflix in North America on February 27, which is also known as “Pokémon Day.”
