While Blizzard has shed some light on Wuyang’s character details, the newly minted support in Overwatch, players are already split between considering his water-based skills to be truly rolling in waves or just hissing out. The official Overwatch Twitter account teased portions of his abilities during the reveal, saying it was “all about going with the flow and working as one” with the community being somewhat skeptical that he may require a huge buff come his Hero Trial weekend.
The moment Wuyang got a taste of all sorts of criticism, people accused him of being underwhelming, healing-wise. One player said, “He’s so ass,” and someone else said that at best, Guardian Wave just heals 25% of an empty bar. Theorycrafting about his damage claims was not very fruitful, as the overall opinion was that it was less threatening than a splash in the kiddie pool.
Well, these debates are not always black or white. Some new theorycrafting is happening. One acclaim claimed to wipe entire teams in testing by pairing Wuyang with Orisa. Another one said Wrecking Ball’s ult is almost an exact synergy for Wuyang’s abilities. And, of course, the Rein community wants Wuyang’s playstyle covered by too many casual plays that toss a game or two (sorry in advance).
If it did not sound like an Overwatch discussion, some spicy grievances are dropped on top as a hot sauce. While some players are pleading for Blizzard to reverse the movement nerfs that their favorites received (looking at you, Juno), others want Mama Hong to finally show up and give it her all. Why not, really?
Biggest one to come along: Wuyang’s mobility is quite a controversial matter. His Wave Dash and Jump Boost feel “insignificant” to some, while others would rather see Water Orb be slower and hit much harder. So, on one thing they all agree on: he’s a lot of fun but needs balancing before going meta.
The question remains: Will Wuyang make an impact or sink to the very bottom of the Support tier list? Well, that will surely come out during his Hero Trials weekend. And, regardless, the Overwatch community will never be shy about letting their opinions be loud, passionate, and full of memes.
At least he’s not another DPS. Small victories.
