Blizzard Entertainment has just announced that a new Mythic skin in Overwatch 2 for the character Doomfist has been released, the skin is called ‘Magma Titan.’ The skin will be given to the players who can get it starting from January 8th, the date stated in the official tweet from the game’s account. The announcement triggered mixed and instantaneous reactions from the Overwatch community, and it raised once again the issues of skin quality, character balance, and cosmetic preferences.

So, Blizzard went ahead and let the cat out of the bag with the teaser for the next mythic skin of a character and it’s for Doomfist. They call it Magma Titan and it will drop on January 8th. The tweet reads, “Too hot to handle. Too molten to miss,” which is certainly a catchy phrase. And to be fair, judging just by the image? It is a lot. It is a gigantic lava dude wearing a huge gauntlet of molten rock. The reds, oranges, and blacks are all very vibrant. You got the picture.

The fact is, though, the replies are where the real deal is. Apparently, the skin was presented by the community as a splitter. Some players are completely in favor of it. User PachiDoom reposts “this is gorgeous” and mil_kth too says “SO COOL 🔥🔥.” Even _BEZMON_ was included in the chat with “Wow blazing graphics!” It’s a big skin getting a lot of approval, still, those who like to see such things will always find reasons behind their choice. They are just seeing a big lava fist and their thought is, “yes, more of that, please.”

On the flip side, the harshest criticism comes. User RetiredFPSVet wonders “What in tf is this garbage lmaoo,” which is very direct. Kenqz3 is also confused saying “What in the actual fuck is this.” _Kamru_ is labelling it “atrocious quality” and “fiery hot garbage” on different posts. Thus, the hate for this skin is really strong among certain players. It’s not even like a mild dislike, it’s total disgust for a segment of the player base.

And the comparisons start to flow. Almost immediately, user comandre_ claimed that “this just feels like a different version of Blackhand Doomfist.” If you check Blackhand, it’s also a dark skin with lava highlights. So the critique is that it is not very original? Just another lava-themed skin for the character whose whole story revolves around punching. And people are disputing in another thread that it is nearly the same as another skin, only with a different outfit and skin tone. So, there is a strong questioning of the creativity.

But wait, the discussion about the skin never stays only about the skin, does it? No. It quickly spirals into everything else that is wrong or right with Overwatch. User BambamPewpew32 uses the occasion to pray: “Now remove empowered punch and give uppercut pls.” Ah, the traditional balance request smuggled in a skin reveal. Cartcheifa is already sour and says, “Yuck and we are gonna have to deal with throw fist every game,” perceiving the queue of Doomfist players wanting to show off the new drip rushing into match lobbies.

Moreover, there is the entire mythic skin discussion that gets reignited. User Ignition1489 drops the truth bomb that a lot of players feel: “like every mythic it looks good but has no customization so it highkey sucks.” This is a very important issue! Mythic skins are supposed to be the highest tier, but since OW2 launch, they have not had the color/part customization that was originally shown as one of the features. Therefore, even if you like it, you are stuck with it as is. Anhn91 even suggests a “random from favorites” button for mythic cosmetics, which is, actually, a pretty nice idea.

Of course, the character favoritism complaints are out too. User scrhiia simply says “but can’t give brigitte a mythic,” which expresses all the Brig mains’ feelings waiting for their turn. And Nariv_OW makes a skin distribution comment, “Lucio got less skins in Overwatch 2 than Kiriko in one season.” It’s never just about the one skin, it’s about the whole ecosystem, you know?

There is also a mini French debate about game balance and skill going on. Users LarbiCoupable and kata914_ are having a discussion whether Doomfist is a cheat or hard to play depending on one’s skill level. They talk about cooldowns, healers, and hitscan aiming. It is unbelievable that a skin announcement has sparked such a big discussion about the meta in another language. But that’s how it is in the Overwatch 2 community. The conversation about this new cosmetic for PlayStation and Xbox players is about much more than just looks.
