Ever since its initial release back in 2015, it has gone on to achieve a loyal following thanks to its approachable design and diversity in hero selection. You can pick up Overwatchwithout having much experience in the shooter genre and still find a lot to like.

That being said, its skill-based systems give you plenty to learn and master regardless of which hero you select. These elements still shine bright even as the original Overwatch is winding down.

Blizzard is looking to build upon their successful recipe in Overwatch 2, which has garnered a lot of attention since its first official announcement. How much better can this hero shooter get and what will the developer do to continue its evolution?

These questions have circulated around the gaming industry ever since the original announcement back in 2019. Many hoped for a possible 2021 release, but according to the developer directly, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

In a recent earnings call with investors, Blizzard Entertainment confirmed that both Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 wouldn’t be ready for a 2021 release. Not only that, but no official update on a release schedule was provided. That’s unfortunate news, but not that really surprising.

The developer hasn’t revealed too much about the sequel and their silence seemed to indicate that the sequel still needs time in the development oven. Could 2022 be a more realistic timeframe? That remains to be seen, but that’s the hope from the die-hard fanbase.

Until then, fans will just have to wait in anticipation and enjoy the still stellar gameplay in Overwatch. It has gotten better over the years and received plenty of updates, so that should keep you busy until Overwatch 2 is eventually ready for the public. Hopefully, that’s sooner rather than later.

The developer can do so many great things to further the Overwatch brand, especially on consoles considering the PS5 and Xbox Series X are now available. It would be cool to see them implement some noteworthy things, so that next-gen console owners that are fans of this hero shooter have a lot of things to look forward to.
