This particular announcement came crashing into the Nintendo fandom rather abruptly. And honestly? Not the fun kind of announcement at all; not the type of announcement that says good news is coming, like the announcement of a new Mario game; more like the “wait WHAT” announcement.

Word is spreading around that Nintendo Switch 2 games could be priced at $79.99. Yup! $80. For one game. That’s like two huge Chipotle burritos. With guac. Poof.

Now, before Joy-Cons can be said to scream (see what I did there?), let’s dissect this. The rumor has barely credible-ish source-so consider this a toss-up. But it actually kind of makes sense?

What more are you supposed to think? Right now, the other games come in at that $70 price tag for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Honestly: first-party Nintendo games NEVER discount. Ever. So if they do raise it another $10, those babies are still gonna sell millions upon millions of copies… because it’s freaking Nintendo.

Now, let me tell you. Nintendo fans are…. picky. We will throw down $60 for a five-year-old port of Skyrim, but ask $80 for a new Zelda? This might be pushing it.

And speaking of third parties, why would anyone buy, let’s say, FIFA or Call of Duty on Nintendo’s device when Switch 2 games would cost more than PS5 titles? Unless the hardware has some next-level magic underneath (which, knowing Nintendo, it could), it might just flop.

I mean, don’t forget that Nintendo is still selling Mario Kart 8 Deluxe completely at full price SIX YEARS AFTER ITS INITIAL RELEASE. So if they choose to go with an $80 pricing plan…. wow.

So, what do YOU think? Would you pay $80 for a Switch 2 game? Or is that the time to finally get up and start a petition or something?
