Need for Speed Heat is about to make history for the Electronic Arts banner. Once its June 9 update goes live, this action racer will offer cross-play support.

That means Xbox One, PC, and PS4 users will all be able to play together online. This news comes from Criterion Games, who have taken over the racing series and plan on bringing it back to prominence.

Cross play is definitely a good start. Games that have this feature are better in terms of their multiplayer. It essentially allows gamers to have a wider pool of users to play with. Players can also usually customize which platforms that want cross-play with, be it strictly consoles or a combination of both.

It’s a smart tactic from Criterion Games that makes Need for Speed Heat all the more social and memorable. This upcoming feature will be pretty user-friendly, too.

All you have to do is head to the Find Players menu and then search for particular platforms you want access to.

This new feature is just another reason to check out Heat’s return to form. It didn’t revolutionize the racing genre, but it’s a good starting point compared to the previous installments that were getting overly repetitive.

If you haven’t yet checked it out, you get two different experiences during the day and night. At night, you get to enjoy a no-limits type of racing where the cops aren’t as prevalent. That sets you up for some memorable street races.

Then during the day, things are a little more sophisticated. You have to be hyper-vigilant of the law and its distinctness definitely helps keep gameplay fresh.

Heat also shines bright with its vehicle customization system. Like the Underground games, there are so many ways you can adjust your cars. From new paint jobs to custom rims, the design possibilities are endless.

These elements are the reason why so many fans fell in love with this racing series to begin with. It’s great that the developer recognized this and listened to the community.

Things are looking pretty bright for the Need for Speed franchise overall. Cross-play support being added to Heat should give players another reason to come back, perhaps to play with friends they couldn’t prior to this update.

Criterion Games seems poised to further the series in new directions. They’re already working on a new game in the long-running series. It will be interesting to see what they do next.
