With the end of Mortal Kombat 11, many fans were wondering if it could be the end of the franchise. No spoilers, but from a story perspective the game had sort of ended everything in a way where there wasn’t much of a way to continue on with the story.
Of course, while Mortal Kombat 11 definitely has a rich storyline to it, it’s not a surprise to know that most people aren’t playing it to learn the lore behind everything. There was always a good chance that the ending of the story wasn’t going to be the ending of the franchise, for quite a few reasons.
Ed Boon, Co-Creator of the franchise, took to the stage at the Final Kombat 2020 Tournament to address the fandom.
“Thank you, everybody, for supporting Mortal Kombat,” Boon stated. “We love to do these reveals at these events as a thank you for all of this support for all of these years. There is a lot more to come with Mortal Kombat as well, this isn’t the end of the whole support for this game. We’ve got a lot of surprises in store.”
He didn’t elaborate on the surprises, obviously, since that’s what makes it a surprise, but fans are already speculating on what the team has in store. We recently saw the trailer for the upcoming animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, based on the iconic character of the same name, which looks to be equal parts gore-filled and incredible.
But that doesn’t count as support for the games, does it? No, but it certainly pushes the envelope of what we might expect. We also have the upcoming addition of Image Comics’s legendary superhero, Spawn, into the game, so we might have some new characters coming.
We do also have rumors from the game’s launch of possible DLC fighters, namely Fujin and Sheeva from the Mortal Kombat franchise and Ash from the Evil Dead series. Obviously, these were just datamined rumors, so there’s no guarantee on them, but anything seems possible at this point.
Either way, knowing that the Mortal Kombat franchise will continue on is a great relief, and knowing that the current installment in the franchise still has more coming is nothing short of exciting. Mortal Kombat has survived as a franchise for decades because of how far it constantly innovates and pushes boundaries in a variety of ways. There’s no way for us to know what’s coming down the pipeline, but we can expect it to be both brutal and amazing.
