Two million copies of Metaphor: ReFantazio could never be small news. For had it been not so, the mere mention of 2 million copies sold would have seemed like such a bizarre statement! And there is no end to this hype train currently, with gamers begging open-heartedly for a Switch 2 edition.

The announcement came from the Atlus Twitter account, posts of thanks to everybody who supported the game together with some artwork by Shigenori Soejima, the character designer. While the devs were rejoicing in the announcement, the replies were a messy battlefield—gamers are torn between rejoicing in its success and strongly demanding more-that demand in great urgency.

Those who think ahead are: “You put the game on Switch 2 in a 64gb cartridge and you’ll have even more sales!” says @AnimeBasicKurt, whilst @BundiAl555 claims his route is a bit longer “Not bad for a beta test. I will wait for the Royal version, though.” Classic Atlus, am I right?

What is most ridiculous is some fans saying that this milestone was reached well before—that is, “2M was reached in March, I don’t know why they announce it today…” pointed out @shikouhana, suggesting that Atlus has been sitting on this news for quite a while. Maybe they were waiting for the perfect moment to drop it; maybe it was just forgotten in the never-ending barrage of news. One can never tell.

And then there is the Xbox marketing-old issue. Some players think that being partnered with Microsoft was the death of sales; in contrast, @snackemkrackem said, “From my perspective it being marketed by Xbox didn’t hurt sales. It became Atlus’ fastest selling game with it surpassing 1 million sales on launch day in less than 24 hours.” Pretty solid comeback to say that this Xbox deal is simply not the disaster some are painting it to be.

Then, of course, came the GamePass crowd. “@realdeatholder And I play this game on gamepass. Xbox marketed this game so stop blaming Xbox.” A fair argument indeed; GamePass probably helped in exposing the game to a different sort of market.

Possibly the only question now that everybody is wondering about would be: When’s the Switch 2 port? Half of the answers read as if they were various renditions of “Switch 2 when?” “Now about that Switch 2 release 👀.” Something that is clear is that Atlus has a built-in audience willing to buy it twice when the next release from Nintendo hits shelves.

With love for the game! @Keziatv2 called it the “Best RPG in the last year,” and @DashJoestar96_ said it dethroned Balatro for personal GOTY. Breaking some serious ground for a brand new IP.

What is possibly coming next for Metaphor? Surely more sales. Maybe some DLC (“DLC when??” —@TensaGotGame). Or in the end, the much-envisioned Switch 2 port everyone is crying for. Whatever happens, Atlus does have a winner in the making, and the game community is very hungry for more.

Now pardon me as I go and check out what all the fuss is about. There was a crowd of 2 million, so they can’t all be wrong, can they?
