Lego Batman was a bombshell by Matt Reeves regarding Batman 2, and honestly, it is the very thing that everyone was waiting for. But that’s what any regular director would say while promoting his sequel: Like duh, you’re not going to say, “Yeah, the next one’s probably going to suck compared to the first.” But Mr. Reeves went on record with IndieWire and said he REALLY thinks this is going to be better than the last one. Pattinson seems to feel that way, too. Both of them seem excited about it. Cool. But what does this even mean for us?
The first Batman with Pattinson was…divisive? People fell in love with it and some thought it was too long and dull at times. In terms of the cinematography, wow should be put here; a visual masterpiece, maybe the best of its kind. But the story? I mean, it was okay-neither jaw-dropping nor groundbreaking. So, hearing that the sequel will be better certainly provides hope, but seriously… how much better? We talking Dark Knight level better or just a tad?
It is a treat to read through the comments on Twitter. Reactions are all over the place. Dr. Ωmega put it in simple words: “It’d have to be..” to which I literally relate: It’s a good movie, but there are many things that could’ve been better, so yes, it should be better. Then Chris Noeth chimes in, “Everything is better than the first film! 🥳,” which in all honesty sounds a little bit harsh, but, hey, to each his own.
On the other hand, there were marketing analysts weighing in with their two cents. Imperionstudios stated that making such a statement is “marketing gold,” how does it keep the media talking and alive for fan speculation. Well, good point. It does get people talking and building hype. Now, this also adds pressure on the filmmakers to put out something worthy of that claim. Because if it is not better? The pit will scream.
Some comments are funny as hell. User owen said, “nigga it better fucking be with this wait,” and honestly? Same energy. We’ve been waiting for this sequel forever, with all of the delays, writers’ strike, and everything in between. So yeah, it better be worth it. Another user suggested we might see it in 2032, which is just an insult, to be honest, but it really mirrors the pace of that release.
The commentary reflects a lot of skepticism. One says the first film was quite boring: only the cinematography is notable, acting and directing quite average. It’s brutal, but hey, everyone has his view. Another said that they want that feeling they’ve had when they saw the Dark Knight the very first-time hope it’s better than that. That is an insanely high bar set, so aim for the stars.
Rumors around the casting are already kicking in. One person is begging for Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy; that would be awesome. Another one wants Batman’s outfit to change, which I can’t really argue against. Just saying that suit in the last one was dope, but hey, a little tweak wouldn’t hurt. And there’s that person saying, “If Batman glides like a squirrel again, it’s a trash movie,” so, uh, ok, pretty specific complaint, but I feel you. The gliding in the first film was a little weird-looking.
The really interesting part is how confident Reeves sounds about this one. He’s not just saying, “we hope it’ll be good;” he’s actually saying that he thinks it will be better. Having Pattinson onboard with that sentiment is huge because, let’s be real, actors aren’t usually this openly enthusiastic about sequels even before they’re done. It makes me wonder what type of greatness they’ve got cooking that has them so excited.
The first Batman movie had tons of money poured into its coffers, and it was generally well-received by critics; hence a lot of pressure is on its sequel to deliver. And with James Gunn doing his own Batman thing for the DCU, Reeves needs to really knock this project out of the park just to keep his Batman alive. A weird time to be a Batman fan with so many running around at once, but if he can, he’s Reeves.
Anyway, all this is just talk. We’ll never be able to say for sure if The Batman 2 is really better or not, at least not until we see it. Still, all this confidence coming from the director and the star is reassuring. But, either way, we are going to see it. Classic Batman and Hollow Knight. Just hoping this upwelling of hype isn’t ultimately for nothing and will really fulfill all these promises. If it does, we’re looking at one of the best superhero sequels ever made, and if it doesn’t? Oh, the internet will have a field day.
So yeah, that’s pretty much Matthew saying that Batman 2 is going to be better. Robert Pattinson totally agrees with him. Can we now just wait and see if they are indeed right, or is it just another round of the usual sequel hype? Either way, the hype is already building, and it’s going to be one heck of a wait before this hits theaters. Hopefully, that hype is really going to pay off.
