Strange enough, Insomniac Games took a lyrical look at an anniversary celebration that the PS4 game, Marvel’s Spider-Man, was turning 7, and, wow, has it only been that much? It felt like yesterday when the whole city-wide swinging began. The tweet was incredibly simple: an emoji of a calendar, the date, and the one famous hashtag that has stayed with us all these years-#BeGreater. However, the replies tell a very different story.
The comments section soon turned into a battlefield for the console wars. The XXbox boyz kept begging for a port whilst PlayStation fans kept telling them to get a job with a lot of chaos in between. User @Lynnadayone chimed in with “Go le sortir sur Xbox ptn!”–something in the lines of “Release it on Xbox, damn it!” And that was just the beginning of the port begging madness.
Wait, what was I saying? Oh yeah, the anniversary. September 7th, 2018, the day when the majestic vessel was launched onto the shores of PS4. And honestly? It still stands. The web swinging mechanic was far ahead at the time. Like, you literally felt like swinging between skyscrapers as Spider-Man! And stories??? That emotional gut punch from Aunt May in the end will still get to me.
Anyway, back to the chaos on Twitter. The sheer number of Xbox players in the replies begging for a port was kind of wild. @TheComixWill says, “Looks great still on my massive wishlist of games that I want to play. I don’t own a playstation.,” like…mood, really. And PlayStation fans started clapping back; @Slay3r881 went “Here come the port beggars” with a laughing emoji. The console wars are alive and well, apparently, seven years later.
The fighting is not 100%, though! People were celebrating the game. @RKNerd1 called it “One of the greatest insomniac games,” which is a fact. And @MoritzOderSo76 said, “One of the best games on PS4 for sure!” which is again, completely true. This game was a system seller for real. Like people bought PS4s just to play this thing.
Now for the other drama. Already discussing Spider-Man 3?? @DarkKageXL just dropped “@insomniacgames @insomniacgames Spider-Man 3 👀” like damn we just got Spider-Man 2 and people are already hungry for more. Then @TrulyNoxified went on this whole rant about how Insomniac has got to “LOCK THE FUCK IN for SM3,” stating SM2’s story “didn’t even come close” to the first game. Which, like…controversial take, but okay.
Oh, and the face change saga is still alive?? @Unqualified4Lyf’s are asking “It’s been 7 years, are you guys gonna finally admit your excuse for the face change was bullshit?” Like, wow, are people really holding on to that one? For those who wouldn’t recall, they changed Peter Parker’s face model between the original game and the remaster, and people went absolutely nuts about it.
There also are some…interesting comments about The Sequel. @PjGamer07 declares “One of the best games ever made, had many expectations for 2, but story for it was horrible,” which ouch. And @DavidSMaki raised the original “Great no woke game unlike Spiderman 2,” which…okay then. The discourse around these games is something else, man.
Also appeared, peeps asking about other Marvel characters. @BebkoMarcin with the simple “Where is Venom or Wolverine?” and another @SpiderJo94 asking “Will we have a venom game someday ?” with the eyes emoji. I mean, guys, we literally just got a Venom game, basically, through Spider-Man 2, but I guess people want more.
Then the funniest part must be @habeebagamer flexing on Platinum for the entire franchise: “Platinum Double Platinum Triple Platinum Three peated the whole franchise on playstation 😂,” which like…respect the grind, honestly. And then someone told THEM to get a job! Classic.
These seven years later, though, this game still has quite a passionate fanbase. People are still arguing about it, celebrating it, begging for ports…like this game really made an impact. And do it anyway? It deserves all the love. The combat was smooth, the story was emotional, the swinging was perfect…it’s just one of those games that gets everything right.
And now looking at where the franchise is? We got one sequel, we got Miles Morales, we got Spider-Man 2…and they’re already hungry for the third one. Insomniac really made something special here. The overwhelming sentiment in the replies is still love for this game despite all the drama and console wars. 7 years after its release, it’s still being talked about, played, and held in pawed memories as one of the greats.
So happy anniversary Marvel’s Spider-Man, I guess. Seven years of web-slinging, seven years of emotional storytelling, and seven years of Xbox port begging that’ll never probably happen. But eh, that’s the glory that is gaming culture. Always a topic to argue over even while celebrating a legitimate masterpiece.
