Shortly after season one of Netflix’s The Witcher was released back in December, fans of the show began petitioning to have Mark Hamill added to the show’s cast, as they want to see him cast as Vesemir in season two. Of course, the legendary Witcher and Geralt of Rivia’s father figure wasn’t shown during the first season, although we did hear his voice during the final episode.
After the fan petition began to pick up steam, Mark Hamill, while acknowledging that he doesn’t know much about the world of The Witcher, said that he’s interested in playing Vesemir. Shortly after that, Lauren Hissrich, who is the writer and showrunner, said that she’d love to work with Hamill, as she’s a massive fan of the Star Wars franchise.
“Mark has always been of interest to me and interest to the project,” Hissrich said. “We have not contacted his agent yet because we’re not casting the role quite yet, but that being said, I am loving what’s happening on the internet.”
Now, according to We Got This Covered, Netflix is trying to honor the fans’ request and has contacted Hamill about playing Vesemir in season two. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the legendary actor will accept the role, but given that both sides have publicly expressed their interest in working with each other, it’s likely that he’ll end up alongside Henry Cavill during the show’s highly anticipated second season.
If you’re unfamiliar with the book series and/or the games, Vesemir is an older Witcher and served as a mentor and father figure to Geralt of Rivia. He’s also mentored several other Witchers at Kaer Morhen, and trained as a member of the School of the Wolf. Because of their mutations, Witchers have unusually long lifespans, with Vesemir being one of the oldest remaining of his kind, as he’s over two hundred years old.
Earlier this week, we learned that the second season of The Witcher has started filming ahead of schedule. Originally, the second season was going to begin filming next Monday, but they got started a bit early.
As of right now, it looks like we’ll have to wait until next year to see the second season of The Witcher, as it could be released on Netflix in the spring of 2021. Also, given that the filming process has started, it won’t be long until we find out whether or not Mark Hamill has accepted the role of Vesemir.
