Lost Soul Aside is out, and the PC port is utterly broken. To clarify, imagine slipping in to get some supper but landing flat on your face in Stutter City. That’s the experience I’m having, and it’s without using ray tracing. I’m sure you all “noticed” with the thick layer of sarcasm I’m dripping.
This all kicked off with NikTek publicly uploading framerate dips in what should be a basic cutscene. The caption spoke for itself, and he should’ve kept it to himself: “Lost Soul Aside is built on Unreal Engine 4. The stutters are insane even with Ray Tracing turned off. It’s honestly unreal how none of the recent UE Games manage to keep a stable framerate on PC.”
And I agree with what he said. But I’m not referring to what’s becoming an echo chamber of the focus of the boo. Oh, right, the replies were insane.
Some players are quick to blame the developers. TheOneAboveFew, for instance, said “Lazy devs. Nothing more” and while that comes off as harsh, we all know gamers expect movie-level performance for anything less than 60 fps. Getting “Lazy or experienced Devs” from Yakoubbarca10 is better than nothing, at least.
And then defenders of Unreal Engine show up. SynthPotato said this: “UE4 usually has fantastic performance as seen in Stellar Blade, this is definitely a developer issue.” VertexEntity agreed; “Stellar Blade and Lies of P both use UE4 and run perfectly, korean devs know handling this engine.”
So it’s not the engine’s fault, then? Well, what about those multiple issues that games made in UE get? Robby1614 broke down the tech side: “It’s the shader model. It’s not optimized. A good dev can fix it but it’s not easy. UE is widely used because once you learn how to use it (big learning curve) it’s easy to use and it all works. But it ain’t optimized. ”
Unreal Engine is like that really powerful sports car that’s amazing in the right hands but if you don’t know how to drive it properly you’re gonna crash into everything.
The hardware discussion also got out of hand. Ganja_inspector claimed “Stutters like crazy on my 5090” which… wait 5090? That card doesn’t even exist yet?? Either typo or someone’s from the future. Adding to The confusion is WayneL96134803 saying “I have a 5900x3d and get no dips in UE5 games. No idea what these lil guys are doing.”
Then there’s the whole ray tracing debate. D_S_O_Gaming actually responded with their own video showing that same cutscene running smoother. “There is definitely something wrong with your PC setup. Same cut-scene, and there aren’t such stutters. And that’s with Ray Tracing On.” which utterly conflicts with the original complaint!
Some players are even asking why the game uses UE4 instead of UE5. Swolidarity said “@NikTekOfficial UE 4? The fuck, what made them go with that over UE 5,” which is a valid question. “Maybe because they started the project ten years ago,” says Sgaragarru87, which is plausible based on the development of the game, although not confirmed.
The mute performance on mobile compared to PC is strange. Corrupteddiv said, “In my opinion, Unreal is doing great on mobile, with Wuthering Waves and Arena Breakout, which look great and even run at 120FPS on a mid-high phone. But on PC/Consoles, it is really another world.” Which is odd because you would expect the PC to run it better.
Naturally, this was followed by jokes. NexelGTA quoted “it’s honestly unreal” with the laughing emoji. Why? Because of a pun related to Unreal Engine. Qsc_nil noticed it too “yeah it’s honestly unreal, I see what you did there 🤣”
Everyone in the thread is a example of how different the opinions are on this. Some blame the dev, and some blame the engine, while others blame specific PC setups. Everyone has witness testimony to say they are right.
Users report that Lost Soul Aside’s PC performance ranges from smooth to a stutter fest. Some players report that performance is fine, while others with web escorts confirm the best and the worst. By far, the middle ground seems to prevail, with only a small portion of users complaining of minor optimization issues.
Whatever the case may be, Lost Soul Aside continues to struggle with smooth performance optimizations. More than likely, the argument will continue, Inc, whether the developers patch the issue, given the number of other games using Unreal Engine. If you are planning on playing the game on PC, I recommend locking the frame rate.
