The Kingdom Hearts 4 announcement by Square Enix seems a bit stretched out, two long years for us to sit and consider our status? Crickets. A whole lotta nothing. That tweet just rubs salt into the wound, reminding everyone about, yeah, it was announced, and yeah, they are still waiting.

For those who missed it, the reveal of Kingdom Hearts 4 was in April 2022 with an extravagant trailer that sent fans screaming. Sora wakes up in a sickly-real city! New enemies? A shift in the whole tone, perhaps? Well, there was all that—and then… silence. Not a word on a release window or gameplay peeks; updates dried up fresh from the news crumbs of information.

And the decaying responses? More or less, nonexistent. Probably worse than nothing. Usually, you’d expect an avalanche of fan demand, meme reprisals, or at least some desperate pleas for updates to flood the tweet-feed. But nah, complete silence. Mayhaps every fan is too pooped to complain anymore, or mayhaps they have accepted how Square Enix is a snail with a backpack full of Final Fantasy lore.

Crazy to think Kingdom Hearts 3 launched in 2019, four years later, with only a teaser for the coming title. In the meantime, this franchise is pumping mobile games and remasters like nobody’s business. Kingdom Hearts Dark Road? Missing-Link? Cool but where’s the banquet?

Naturally, fans have theorized about it. Some said Square’s too busy on 7 Rebirth and other titles. Some say GH4 is already in developmental hell, just like its predecessor. As for the bright bunch, they are quite deluded indeed to believe that their cooking up something so awesome will leave us all cool and collected when we finally get to sip it.

In all honesty though, Square Enix is a snail with a slow reflex. Well, with Kingdom Hearts 3 taking a good decade after its sequel, I think Kingdom Hearts 4 is safe for another two or so years. One would think that a screenshot, a developer interview, something, would be given to us to prove that it isn’t vaporware.

So for now, it’s the same old story; we are back to the trailers that debuted two years ago and wondering if Sora is still trapped in that weird city. Or is he even still the protagonist? Or is Nomura just messing with all of us again and throwing mangoes in one of his plot twists?

So technically, next anniversary twit will bring the “news” at last. More mobile game announcements, probably. The fanbase is waiting patiently (wishful thinking, huh?) while the wheels of the Kingdom Hearts fanbase are sporadically turning ahead. Square, come on. Give us something. Anything. A doodle of a gummy ship. A cryptic tweet. Just… something.
