So basically, the Vegas Sphere is that gigantic screen, yeah? That thing is huge, ridiculously huge. It’s so outrageously expensive to display anything on it. What did they choose to set on this monument? Kai Cenat’s Fortnite skin. I’m serious: a streamer used the projection on the immense Sphere in Vegas to reveal his new Fortnite Icon Series skin, and the internet had… opinions. Possibly lots.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Kai Cenat is basically one of the biggest streamers-one of the largest on Twitch. And Fortnite gives these Icon skins to celebrities and creators that have made a massive impact on the game or culture or whatever. So Kai got one, and instead of just tweeting about it, he put it on the Sphere. It actually was a pretty great power move, and kudos to him for that. Now, the skin- the skin is Kai himself, but in Fortnite. With shorts, which a lot of people seem to not care that much about. I’ll come back to that.

Let’s just say that the reveal was another thing entirely. Imagine casually strolling down the strip in Vegas and in comes this gigantic Fortnite character towering over you. It’s a totally cyberpunk-esque affair, but with even more dance emotes. The community, of course, was filled up with thoughts at that point and time.

First thoughts were interrogative: why should Kai get a skin before others? Jack’s World retorted, “Why TF is he getting an icon skin when he barely plays the fucking game???” Which is probably a fair point, I guess? Then, other voices came back: “Many others have one they don’t play either.. You think LeBron James or Eminem is playing Fortnite?” And to be fair, they do have a point. Icon skins have never really been about the large volume of gameplay; it’s about putting eyes on the game. And Kai puts on A LOT of eyes.

Another debate begins over that skin itself. Aurora Martini just shouted out, “IS no one gona talk about how bad the skin is like its just me is it? those shorts are just eww,” which is funny because, well, fashion is subjective I guess. Yet there are others that call it “so ass” or dismiss the design overall. Then you have the others that like it! “looks so cool bro!” said Cat. So yeah, it’s very contradictory.

The Vegas Sphere itself was also much talked about. Powelldinho commented, “I don’t know if I think the Las Vegas Sphere is cool or the most retarded piece of human innovation, I’m squarely in the middle,” which basically sums up just about every thought on the Sphere. It is either the coolest thing ever or what a shame to spend so much money on, depending on who you ask. In turn, thecrazedminer pointed out that it messes with post-apocalyptic depictions of Vegas now, which is such a niche yet very valid point. Fallout New Vegas anamorphosed cannot have that sphere! It just breaks the lore!

Then there’s the whole charity angle. “Allat and not a cent donated to charity 😂” said Im_Davidrich, which sparked a rush of comments debating whether Kai should be donating from this. Then PyroClipz shot back, “Why y’all think he is obligated to donate? He is his own man he could donate to whoever he want wtf.” And yeah, both sides have a point? It’s complicated.

Some went indifferent. “I don’t care,” said The_Farticvs, which is a fair enough response. Then Estrid asked, “Is anyone watching this?” While Wheezley remarked, “Nothing says you got your own icon skin because you have money like showing it on the Vegas Sphere,” which kind of sums up the entire issue. A flex, plain and simple.

Moving on to the positives. “Gaming and entertainment colliding on the biggest screen in the world. Kai’s influence is insane,” Scar_web3 wrote, which is true! Like him or hate him, getting your Fortnite skin on the Sphere is a cultural moment. The marketing team should definitely get a bonus, says Freecash.com.

There’s drama brewing about Kai and Adin Ross? “Kai cenat has been fading and treating Adin ross like shit. Adin ross literally made his career,” claimed Tinylilmandingo, which, I don’t know enough about streamer drama to comment on, but it sounds messy.

Then we come to the loudest haters. “Amazing news for the underaged, the retarded and the unemployed 🤣,” went Its_pickletime, which, wow, that’s a take. And XayStationTV continued with, “Why the fuck are we posting about these people?” Which definitely goes into meta.

But all in all, this is a landmark moment for gaming culture, either for or against: Kai Cenat’s Fortnite skin reveal on the Vegas Sphere. It says a lot about how far streaming has come since then, how Fortnite is still the in-thing to talk about, and how far gone marketing can get. Half a million dollars to put a skin on a sphere? Yep, that’s the world we’re living in now. And you know what? Kind of awesome with its level of absurdity. The skin will still sell millions no matter what Twitter thinks, and Epic will be laughing all the way to the bank with Kai flexing harder than ever. It’s the circle of life, but with more v-bucks.
