In the interim, seemingly, PlayStation has posted a new tweet about this James Bond game from IO Interactive, i.e. the developers behind Hitman. They were showing multiple ways of completing objectives in @007GameIOI. The tweet linked to a deep dive of over 30 minutes of gameplay, which is uncommon as the game continues to fly much under many gamers’ radars.
Let me enchant you with that: replies to the tweet are so messy, and half of them aren’t even focused on the game. Apparently, PlayStation’s servers decided to throw a fit the exact moment this was posted, and now rather than talking about Bond, everyone is complaining about not being able to do anything online. @CheesyCobra pipped up, stating, “Nobody can even play your fucking games right now,” which is, um, harsh but somewhat true if the network is down. @ajrockswithmma took it a step further with a full-blown rant about how Sony would vanish at times like this and that it actually owes us some sort of compensation. All a hilarious drama.
Anyway, let’s go back to the real thing. The new 007 title is under development by IO Interactive, and if you’ve played one of the recent Hitman titles, you know that options are their thing. So it would fit for them to transfer the same philosophy to James Bond. The deep dive video sort of shows different approaches to missions—stealth, all-out action, maybe some social stealth. That’s their thing.
Hence, not everyone is so pleased. Countless replies call this game a “reskinned Hitman,” which… Well, it’s from the same devs so it’s going to feel similar. @ragehunterpod went on this whole thread about it: “If I want a hitman game, I’ll play hitman. This is not what anyone asked for in a 007 game.” And @WatchinYouuuu labeled it “so generic” and commented, “AI could of created this game.” Ouch.
Then there’s @Neo_Neo_chance just chiming in with “this is basically just a Hitman reskin from what im seeing” which seems to be the common sentiment from critics. But like, is that necessarily a bad thing? The Hitman games are fantastic so if they’re applying that formula to Bond, it could actually work really well. Remember how everybody loved the freedom in those games?
There are those who are pumped, though. @Keyblader007 claims, “so excited for this, just preordered physical.” @OyaPlayOfficial then responded with, “Deep dive unlocked: master every approach,” which sounds so bot-like but comes with a neat sentiment.
Interspersed random questions cling to the conversation, like @askamsky51 wondering if PSVR2 support is one of the ways to play. Meanwhile, @Platinum_Mask declared that PSVR2 owners have been “playing Chad like a real 007 for a few years now,” whatever the hell that means. Wait, what was I saying?
Getting back to the game, it’s neat that IOI is doing Bond since it’s been forever since we’ve had a good 007 game. The last one was… what, 2012’s 007 Legends? And that was not so great. So there’s definitely a gap in the market for a modern Bond game, and IOI has the chops to pull it off.
But the timing of this tweet just screams awkward amidst the PSN issues. @JRTheReaper666, @MiloSampa, @ghostyy_xd, @SatchoInnaCut, @DanPark79519935 —I’m guessing these accounts are just a handful of the many telling PlayStation to fix the servers instead of actually talking about the game. @freewhoa76 even managed to squeeze in, “Fix the fucking servers can’t believe a shitty ass game caused this,” which is probably not true but hey, frustration is high.
There’s also some regional whinging, with @darksouldream wanting to know about regional pricing for Latin America with the hashtag #NoAlDolarPSN. Then there’s @Manc_Muslim94, who mentions something about a parachute being a pain to get, which might be in reference to something in the deep dive video.
So overall, the reaction is a mixed bag. Some people are excited about the concept of a Hitman-styled Bond game while others dismiss it as lazy and unoriginal. And a vast majority of the replies are just people ranting about PSN being down, understandable but also completely unrelated to the game.
It’ll be interesting to see how this develops. IOI is a talented studio, with the Hitman games being widely acclaimed for depth of gameplay. The moment they can seize the essence of Bond and place that flexibility side by side, it will become something very special. But they have to somehow win over all of those skeptics who already perceive it as a reskin cash grab.
They best will have made sure PlayStation’s servers were in working order come game release so that some of the people are actually going to be able to play this. I mean, what good is multiple ways to accomplish an objective if you can neither download the damn thing nor patch it up? Just sayin’.
All right, that’s what’s going down. From the Hitman devs, a new 007 game, the deep dive gameplay is out, reactions are splattered all over the place, and PSN is hot to hell and back. Just another day in gaming news.
