Okay, the gaming world just exploded. Literally! The DIE HARD Team Cherry declared DEFCON 1: Silksong shall have a special announcement this Thursday. And that announcement will be via a YouTube Premiere. Are they now saying that a Premiere is an accepted method for delivering announcements?
Something huge has to come for all who have kept track of the entire Silksong trilogy. Meaning: everyone who played the first game. A good number, that. The original Hollow Knight is one of those indie games with something extra. Perfectly balanced with hard combat sequences, gorgeous UI art, and a convincing lore narrative, therefore, a great number of gamers have kept their fingers crossed for the sequel. And waiting. And waiting more.
The official Twitter account’s announcement said only “Special Announcement Thursday.” No more, no less. This really threw the Internet into frenzy. In just minutes, the replies became maddening chaos. And you would have expected pretty much so.
Some are going to heaven. User GugaJyouki wrote, “Holy shit this gonna be big,” and I agree with this statement. UFireball788267 posted a gif of somebody celebrating with “IT’S FINALLY OVER I CAN BE NORMAL AGAIN!!” which, I’m with. This wait for this game has been so long, people have almost made whole memes and inside jokes about it. There are even mentions of candles somehow working?? Like, what does that even mean? But anyway, I get it.
Then there is the other side. The side that has been hurt before. Because really, Silksong’s development has been long. Therefore, the skeptics must show up. User synthwaveboy responded with, “Another delay” and a crying emoji. IAmPaulQuinn took the forever-doom route, saying, “The game has been cancelled. We’re so sorry for making you wait.” Followed by, “I’m joking, please don’t kill me.” Which is actually hilarious, but you should really not put that energy out there man!
Then there were the confused ones with user zephrovicz asking, “what the fuck is Youtube Premiere?” A valid question, actually. It’s just YouTube making a scheduled premiere for videos so everyone can watch it together live. It has become the usual choice for game announcements lately.
The international replies are also wild. People speak Portuguese, “Vixi, não era esquema é real mesmo,” and now translate to “Wow, it wasn’t a scheme; it’s really real.” From Spanish, there are comments such as “Me da igual pero al menos diran fecha si o si y mostraran cosas,” which means “I don’t care, but at least they’ll give a date for sure and show things.” The hype is truly global!
The black sheep shows up as well. User darkvis1on comes in with the hot take: “I could barely stand playing this game for two hours. What’s all the hype about? Why would people wait for a sequel when the first game wasn’t even fun and felt like just another indie title without anything unique?” Okay first of all, fight me. Second of all, clearly you didn’t get past the first area. The first Hollow Knight starts slow but once it gets going it becomes one of the best metroidvanias ever made. But hey, not every game is for everyone I guess.
What’s really interesting is seeing how different communities are reacting. There’s people talking about getting it on Game Pass, others just hyped to finally see something. User Mr_S3rv3r points out this is part of a big week with Bendy 3 news and Fallout TV show teasers too. All the delayed stuff is finally coming at once.
Obviously, the number one thing everybody wants to know is the release date. The first game came in 2017, and the announcement of Silksong followed in 2019. That’s a development time of five years – which is not really an unbelievable amount of time for an indie game of this scale. But to the people waiting, it feels like forever. Gameplay we’ve seen looked great though: faster combat, new abilities, an entire new kingdom to explore as Hornet instead of the Knight.
Team Cherry has always been release-wise silent throughout development – that is their style. They don’t do constant updates, developer diaries, or anything like that. They merely work until they have something to show. The fact that this announcement is coming now means they’re ready to show something quite substantial – perhaps even the ever-elusive release date everyone’s been begging for.
An announcement at a YouTube Premiere, that’s interesting though. It suggests they’ve got a decent trailer or gameplay showcase ready. Not just a tweet with a date. Which makes sense – Silksong is probably one of the most anticipated indie games ever at this point. They’ve gotta make it special.
Oh, but the excitement is palpable in some of the replies. Casual_SiFi is pretty much yelling “SILKSONG TOMORROW TOMORROW” which, not quite, but soon. Then we have StolenLemon69 saying “AND I WILL BE THERE,” which is the same; I will be refreshing the YouTube page all day come Thursday.
Then we have this whole thing in the reply section where people start tagging their friends saying things like “We can finally rest” and “God exists and he is good.” The memes have gotten so out-of-control that the actual announcement feels surreal. Like, really is it happening? After all the false leaks and disappointments, an actual official announcement feels a little too good to be true.
But it is real. Team Cherry doesn’t joke about this stuff. When they say special announcement, they mean it. The question is what exactly they’re announcing. Could be the release date. Could be a gameplay deep dive. Could be a demo announcement. Honestly at this point anything would make people happy.
Hollow Knight was the masterpiece that showed up out of nowhere. It had no right to be as good as it was. Silksong is hence that much more expected to deliver. However, by what we have seen of it, it seems they are expanding upon everything which made the first game great. More mobility, more complex combat, a whole new strange set of abilities, and enemies.
Thursday needs to come now. The wait has been pretty brutal but it might just actually be paying off. Hollow Knight has been waiting patiently for so long, but now we just might get some answers. Just a few more days of hype and speculation and we’ll be good.
Whatever they’re gonna show will really break the internet though. That status is so mythical that even people who’ve never played the first game are excited. It’s fast turning into a cultural thing in the gaming world. The big wait. The endless delay memes. Maybe it’s really coming to an end?
So mark your calendar, set your alarm. Thursday is gonna be wild. After years of radio silence, we’re finally getting something. And if the first game is anything to go by, it’ll be worth the wait. Team Cherry doesn’t miss. They take their time but they deliver quality. Silksong will probably be incredible whenever it comes out. But knowing when that “whenever” actually is would be nice too.
The hype train has left the station now, and nothing is stopping it. Thursday can’t come soon enough! After all this time, we might finally have some answers. Or at least something new to obsess over while waiting some more. Either way, it’s happening. Finally.
