Put your seatbelts on, gamers; this is NOT a drill. After waiting for what felt like an actual eternity, memes galore, and some borderline delusional hype, Hollow Knight: Silksong supposedly goes on shelves in two weeks now. I said. TWO. WHOLE. WEEKS. This ghastly one-drop micro-bombshell from the official Nintendo America Twitter account sent shockwaves through the gaming community in an instant collective meltdown.
What does that mean exactly? For those customers living under a rock (or just trying to avoid the pain of constant waiting), Hollow Knight: Silksong is the sequel to the much-loved indie metroidvania Hollow Knight. Referring back to the concrete announcement in, rabbit, rabbit or something… 2019, it was nearly five years ago! So this isn’t just a new game transition; it’s the ultimate symbol of a long, long era of waiting. The tweet from Nintendo was anything but a beating around the bush: “Hollow Knight: Silksong. Two weeks. Are you ready?👀” They tagged Team Cherry, the developers, and even, somewhat intriguingly, #NintendoSwitch2.
The replies are, as you might expect, a beautifully chaotic mess. Pure internet gold. Some people are beyond excited. User ‘GAMED’ replied saying “I am so excited! I can’t even sleep…” which is, mood. Absolute mood. Another user, ‘asEifie’, hit us with the well-worn meme of “My body is ready.” It’s a whole vibe.
But of course, no internet occasion would be complete without an ample dose of suspicion and cynicism. One user, ‘Jacob F. Sargent,’ replies, “For the hype cycle to drop off a cliff 1 week after launch? You bet I am!” Ouch. Harsh but maybe true to a degree; a fair few of these hype-unleash game releases seem to go just about that way. Another player, ‘FedeRama,’ summed up the feeling of many longtime followers: “I was, like 5 years ago.. Now im just dead inside.” The wait has truly been a journey through stages of emotion, from hype to despair, and now cautiously optimistic?
Then there were the nitty-gritty. Practicalities were already on everyone’s mind. ‘Mo’ yelled in all caps: “HOW MUCH WILL IT COST I NEED TO KNOW SO I CAN HAVE THE MONEY READY.” Very good question! Another user, Mr. Fuzz, said “I’d assume about 20 dollars or so. Hollow Knight was $15, so hopefully they keep up with that philosophy!” Fingers crossed Team Cherry keeps that indie spirit and doesn’t suddenly slap a $70 price tag on this thing.
And then there goes the whole platform debate. The tweet came from Nintendo, so obviously Switch is a big focus. But Silksong is also coming to PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. User ‘Andy’ simply stated “playing on xbox,” meanwhile, ‘Memhisk’ said “yes, I will get it on my pc,” and then ‘aspenmgy’ dropped the big power move: “On Game pass day 1”. If it’s true, that’s a huge score for Microsoft’s subscription service, and an even bigger win for the players.
Some of the responses are just…weird in the best way. ‘MJK’ said, “I’m ready for Terminator 2d: No Fate side scrolling kicking names and taking ass.” Sir, this is a Wendy’s. But we appreciate the energy.
The big question on every other mind apart from if this release is even going down is all the Nintendo Switch 2 mentions. ‘ninjamurai’ puts the question straight up: “Switch 2 key card?” which is a wonderful thought. Are we looking at a cross-gen launch title for the newly rumored Nintendo console? The timing screams… suggestive. If that’s true, just imagine the sell-through the system will enjoy.
Other players are just relieved that it’s happening at all. ‘ShurThing’ kept it real: “I will believe it when I have my hands on it.” After so many fake leaks and years of nothing to cling on to, that’s a valid stance to take. We’ve been hurt before.
And of course, there are all the haters. ‘AzureF 31st’ drops, “Never getting or playing Switch 1, and especially not 2.👎🏾.” Okay cool, thanks for sharing.
What’s actually the deal with this game? Hollow Knight: Silksong is a sequel for the uninitiated that shifts the spotlight from the Knight to Hornet, a massively beloved character from the first game who is much faster and, as compared to the latter, has a completely different moveset all his own. The setting is an entirely new kingdom: Pharloom. It’s been famously secretive and long; with Team Cherry being a very small team that prefers to stay quiet until they have something concrete to show. This tweet and the impending release is basically the very definition of concrete.
This almost makes you wet your pants with excitement, right? But after all of that hype sits heavy relief weighing down on their chests. This isn’t just another game release; this is the culmination of years of anticipation. Is it going to live up to the astronomical expectations? Could any game after such a long wait? We’ll soon find out in exactly fourteen days. The wait is nearly over. Maybe. Probably. Hopefully.
Clear your calendar. Call in sick to work. Prepare for what could be the biggest event in gaming so far this year. Team Cherry is about to either make us for an entire decade or break us into millions of little pieces. No pressure, guys, and no pressure at all.
