Reviewers are finally releasing the review of Hades 2, and they have it all wrong. Of course, Supergiant Games was never going to fail, but this is on a different plane entirely. Hades 2, which has scored a supersonic 93 on Metacritic and 93 on OpenCritic for any game really, had the advantage of having a sequel…and that is just another mind-blowing thing that ever happened.
Right from the beginning, all the big outlets are giving it perfect scores-a clear 10 to IGN, 10 to GameSpot, 10 to Eurogamer, 10 to TheGamer, 10 to GameGrin, 10 to NoisyPixel, 10 to Screen Rant, 10 to Videogamer, and 10 to GameReactor UK, as if across the board. And the scores considered somewhat low are still mighty high: 9.5 from Destructoid and GamingTrend, 9 from PCMag and Twinfinite, and the lowest set of 8 from Metro and Inverse, which, in the given climate, is still a roaring recommendation. This is just…unanimous praise.
The online reaction? Anarchy, but on the bright side. Players seem to be gluing it. Jiordanios drooled out, “Can’t wait to get off work and play this!!,” which probably sums up the entire vibe. JanVac91 joked, “2025 please stop releasing bangers I’m out of money.” That is just so real since this year being stacked, but it also hammers home on how much Hades 2 is really towering over a bunch of heavy-hitters.
The conversation quickly devolved into talks about Game of the Year, which is insane for May, but here we are. It’s already being put head-to-head with other highly anticipated titles. Solariswaken said, “Ya lo dije, el Hades II va a ganar” (“I already said it, Hades II is going to win”). The confidence could be cut with a knife.
And, of course, the much-anticipated classic comparison to Silksong is here as well. Some rando called maselawrence5 threw some shade with “Silksong wasn’t even the best indie game of the month,” which is quite a bold statement and starts some very good conversations. Peripheral_Mind shared the classic evil gamer dilemma: “FUCK I FORGOT I’m gonna have no time for this, silk, and silent hill dawg ðŸ˜ðŸ˜.” It’s a good problem to have; still, a problem.
There were some other, quite intriguing… debates going on. One user, LotteryLukey, seemed to have such an outrageous viewpoint that several others jumped in to refute it. KorverAintMe fired right back: “There can’t be real human beings who think like this. There simply can’t be.” Classic Twitter energy, just prepend the phrase “You gotta scroll past this one,” and enjoy from afar.
Now, beyond the hype and jokes, there is an earth-shattering feeling of genuine celebration for Supergiant. This is a company that has never made a sequel. Every game they made—Bastion, Transistor, Pyre—has been a fresh IP. Then for them to try to do it, and seemingly be successful at the biggest level: This must mean everything to them. Their decision to come back to this world and show that they could actually grow their ideas without losing any of that magic is validated.
Speaking a little about that magic: The original Hades was special because tight, feel-good roguelike action was married to a solid gripping story and characters that you cared for. A good part of its charm comes from the fact that you had relationships of a romantic nature with characters out of the Greek mythology spectrum. That looks like it’s coming back with a vengeance-and maybe better. SteadyBags summed it up with a very funny and probably quite accurate comment when he said, “Great day for bisexuals.” Another member, Dooter, responded, “Hades 1 let you be gay with Death 🗿,” reminding us of the lofty standard that they have set.
An issue raised among the replies was about PlayStation owners: U/E4Evoo lamented, “Waiting for the PS Release is soooo painful.” Now yes, Hades 2 is in Early Access for PC, so console players are gnashing their teeth at this very moment. But if these reviews mean anything, they will be thanking their stars they had to wait.
What is hilarious about this, in its way, is players acknowledging how tough the competition has been this year. User RCreamb pointed out, “well, this has been a great year for gamers; There’s a LOT of great stuff on every platform.” On top of that, the user named a few that have been relevant lately; Metal Gear Solid Delta, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Silksong, and Expedition 33. That says it all; in such a stacked year, for a sequel to an indie game to be talked about as a frontrunner.
What does it all mean? Hades 2 has not just fulfilled the hype but has shattered it in dazzling display. The unthinkable has been accomplished by Supergiant Games, creating a sequel worthy of the original yet brilliant enough to stand on its own. The reviews are outstanding, the excitement from players is through the roof, and this is turning out to be a serious contender for what looks like an all-time-great year for games. For those still undecided, consider this your sign to make the jump back into the Underworld. It is going to be one hell of a trip.
