The newly filled Fortnite item shop with slumber skins has caused quite a stir among the players… very noisy, one might say. There will be two roles as the 800 V-Bucks PJs girls the latest ones among them, and already, this has created a lot of commotion within the community.
The very popular leaker HYPEX released the news on Twitter, showing a picture of the two new skins with their back bling and pickaxes. The prompt effect was that a large number of comments poured in, reflecting various emotions, from uncontrollable laughter to heated argument. One gamer was able to aptly describe the situation, and the overall sentiments, by writing, “HOLY SHUTU ERGG WUVEUAGWHBWVS”, although the phrase may be translated as “they are extremely excited,” in a more formal way.
The same thing cannot be said for the event that took place inside the game. Even before the game developers could declare the skins’ names, many players had already named the characters as the “twink skins.” The new sprites’ names are even being substituted, which was the essence of most of the debates and social media posts. Such specifications were as if they were the ones that most people were comparing the new slim, young-looking avatars with.
Nevertheless, not all the members of the community are expressing the same degree of happiness about it. I see this as a case of somebody already being through arguments that are so controversial as, and I quote from a message “just argued with 2 bitches on Fortnite mic up who got this twink skin. its so baddddðŸ˜ðŸ˜” which is like sound of Fortnite lobby for the first time.
The Fortnite community has been so torn on this subject, however, it is typical for all the skin releases in Fortnite to be like this. It is almost as if it was only the stones and yet people went wild saying they were “so cuteeeee atttt” and “I love them”. However, on the other side, even though they keep comparing and saying “Kill them all”, one person was quite dissatisfied and wanted “Epic to go back to the old skins, the twinks be damned”.
Nonetheless, it is quite surprising that some of the arguments eventually turned into one of the biggest ever in the entire gaming community and had to do with the game only to a very small extent. Hence, Fortnite’s global chat saw the swearing due to the reason that the users saw disliking the skins as a sign of some sort of trouble. Sometimes conversations went beyond Fortnite skins and transduced into a person’s identity as a whole.
Then, there were inevitable questions on the practical aspect of the release which made the situation even more interesting. A large number of players argued of being only 100 V-Bucks short of a purchase and hence would not be able to get what they wanted, the others were completely crushed with guy even expressing his wish for the option of acquiring a bundle of the duck-themed onesies, with the exclamation “bruhh i wish there was a bundle for just the duck twink” – yes, he is one of the ones with a duck-themed pajama wear.
In a few places, future interest was already being stirred up by the talks of the Twitter users as on HYPEX’s timeline they had posted asking if the Jujutsu Kaisen skins might be making a comeback or if Terrifier was still on the game’s roster. That’s how Fortnite goes – the items that come out as the new item are what the community will be most curious about in the future.
The pickaxes were in no way in the background either, with one player specifically commenting that “Both Of The Pick Axes Are Heat”, which in modern gamer language, means “these are really cool weapons to hit people with in the game.”
One of the most fascinating things is that the skin drops have escalated into these sociocultural earthshaking events within the Fortnite virtual community. They are no longer just about aesthetics – they also start conversations, become the topics of debates, and sometimes even cause players to disagree with each other. Even though it is just a pajama-themed event in a game, the fact remains that they were able to generate so much excitement in the battle royale community.
The PlayStation and Xbox platforms have seen similar debates over cosmetic items in other games as well.
