One cryptic tweet from Fortnite has set the player base on fire. The official account posted a teaser, writing: “You say extermination, they say renovation 🐛 Bugs are movin’ in on the map!” with the link probably leading to more information. And then, the community exploded.
First of all, the tweet itself is pretty vague but contains many possibilities and implications. Bugs taking over the map? Could well be anything from some environmental changes to a fully-fledged insect-themed event. Some immediately connected this to Grounded, a survival game by Obsidian in which you play as a miniaturized kid fighting bugs in the backyard, while several others, for sure, think that it’s pointing towards a Helldivers collab, as one of the most repeated demands in replies is that collaboration.
The replies, in general, are outright pandemonium—and rightly so! One asked: “Why bugs? 😖,” while another stated: “;Please make a moth skin 🙏.” Another comment scared off a good few players: “God please no, I’m apiphobic… (I’m not joking).” Meanwhile, the Dragon Ball fandom keeps harrassing for Gohan and Piccolo skins as if it was their full-time job.
By far, the best are the requests for a Helldivers crossover. “We better see a Helldiver skin bruh,” reads one, while another yelled, “HELLDIVERS NEED TO BE HERE.” The community is fiercely divided over bug content, and that is fertile ground that Epic Games can definitely cash in on.
Subreddit Save the World side must be going crazy. “Save The World players will love this,” said a fan with a wink toward the game’s zombie (well, husk) defense mechanics. Meaning more PvE-focused updates? Probably not, but one can hope.
Not everyone’s ecstatic, though. Some players are using the opportunity to cast out the problems they experience, such as: “Stop the collabs in battle passes, make better events, bring back TLR, IO and The Seven.” Then comes a guy whose only words are: “Fix your servers it’s so bad.” Classic Fortnite community—always balancing hype with complaints.
Theories are coming left and right. One proposed an underground bug colony with tunnels to explore and queen bug on the bossfight. Another thinks this might be tied to that Resident Evil collab revival potential, given how many replies are begging for those skins to come back. And then we cannot forget that dude who just couldn’t resist chiming in with, “We came for your nectar,” as if he’s already role-playing a wasp.
At this point, it would be a complete guess as to what Epic is really cooking up. One thing that is clear, though: people are starving for something fresh, whether that’s bug-themed cosmetics, a new game mode, or a giant anthill POI. The hype is genuine, the demands are thunderous, the meme engines are already running; now, the waiting begins to see whether Epic will try to satiate or leave everyone utterly bugged.
What is the next? Is it a bug-themed battle pass? A surprise collab with Grounded? Or just some creepy crawlies slapped on the map for a chaotic aesthetic of their own id? Whatever it is, theories are floating thick, and the community is ready to give it all.
And that unspoken shunning from the moth skin—I’m taking that to my bloody grave…
