Fortnite and their seemingly insane partner are back for a very improbable collaboration with MSCHF; the players are still torn as to how to feel about this. The Item Shop boots, costing 1,200 V-Bucks, are the third set of boots ever offered for sale, ordered by the Big Red Boots from real life by MSCHF, and the reaction has been very, very spicy.
One of the loudest absurdities with which gaming has ever been graced! Chunky and electric red, just the color cartoon characters would sport. MSCHF being an absurdist fashion brand will have a bleak time understanding anything outside the realm of absurdity (remember the Lil Nas X Satan shoes?), and these boots fit right into that mold. But Fortnite players? Half of them embrace the weirdness, the other half are glaring at the price so hard their faces would have turned red with embarrassment had the default skin been anywhere close.
Dropping boots to the community as usual in Fortnite—with no warnings whatsoever—had the whole community polarized. One player, @ASCENSiON1997_, labeled them an “ugly-ass shoe” competing for the same 1,200 V-Bucks with a skin and backbling. Other players, such as @Sinisterknows, actually praised the reaction, “They look awesome in motion.” Then there is @NasonEric22597, who has found the perfect match for his Android 18 skin, which just goes to show one thing: Fortnite culture is pretty much subjective.
Then for the real drama: when they clip through some of the outfits, and clip so badly! @archer_fortnite put up a screenshot showing the boots glitching through some baggy pants, and let’s just say… it isn’t pretty. “Can’t believe they’re $300+ boots IRL and they’re giving this,” @Xaichotic_ summarized his frustration brilliantly. Some players like @GenoQuest are begging Epic for an apparel system so shoes don’t end up looking janky over certain skins.
512 Meanwhile, Dragon Ball fans in the replies are still waiting for Gohan and Piccolo to return (shoutout to @nerdyomniman for keeping the dream alive), and @CyberpunkFN is threatening to “crash out” if Cyberpunk skins don’t make a comeback soon. Classic Fortnite Twitter—always multitasking.
Are these boots worth it? If meme-worthy cosmetics appeal to you and the backup V-Bucks are just lying around, go ahead. But if it’s a skin you’re really going to want—well, definitely hold off. And that’s just what this collab is: insanely Fortnite-unpredictable, divisive, and a total mess. Just as MSCHF intended.
And hey, at least they are not NFT boots. (Looking at you, @BlockRadarX.)
