The Fallout Shelter game has just introduced a brand new season from the Bethesda company, and it is none other than New Vegas. The first season in connection to the vault management game is now available for mobile and PC users, as well as on Steam, where players can personalize an experimental Vault, make friends, and try to rule the town of Novac along with the others. During this adventure, there are lots of new and old rewards to claim from the likes of weapons, outfits, and characters. This is a new content update for the long-time game; however, the community’s reaction? It is nothing but a mixed bag of RadAway and radioactive grief.
In short, the announcement says that a new season results in new items. You can now play either on your mobile phone or on Steam. More information can be found at the official link. But this has just re-emphasized the main point. The very essence of the truth comes from the comments made to the announcement on Twitter. It is like a live play with a lot of drama where a vault door very slowly creaks open to reveal… many complaints and a few happy inhabitants.
Of all the things, the good side of the game is one of the most interesting. A small army of players is absolutely adoring it. A review posted by ‘shzhv13’ reads: “I can see the New Vegas influence everywhere. Shelter is at its best when it gives you a new goal and a reason to expand your vault.” Such a powerful statement! After so many years of being the game’s audience, having a season with a specific aim like Novac control is an excellent way to get players back. Another user, ‘lawrencevanrijn’, commented only “Got fun playing it. 💐” which is so minimal yet so happy. And ‘pflanzensim’ was not a bit hiding his joy that the game is on Steam: “On steam?! Impossible! Need to download it right away. Thanks 😭”. Thus, a section of the mobile and PC gamers’ herd regards this issue as a favorable change.
Sadly, the antithesis of the argument is quite severe. One of the primary problems, and I cannot stress this enough, is that the update is solely for mobile and Steam. This move has granted console players the impression of being frozen in the radioactive cold. User ‘AHolyPaladin’ candidly remarked: “It sucks that you’ve practically discontinued new content for those of us who play Fallout Shelter on console… We haven’t had new content since 2021 or so.” Omg, that’s a very long time! ‘Stevenalean98’ was asking for a console version to be sent “Hopefully console version gets this as well 🙏🙏🙏🙏”. And ‘caludia84’ voiced a very simple yet painful question: “What about consoles?” Even ‘Flap4Flap’ was inquiring “PlayStation, Xbox? Switch?” This is unacceptable and has many gamers confounded, especially since Microsoft currently owns Bethesda. User ‘Yoshi500000000’ stated this very clearly: “why don’t they update the Xbox version of this game? It’s also the Windows store version. It’s funny cos Microsoft owns them too…” This inquiry is really puzzling, right? Like, what’s going on?
Disappointment with the… season pass models was also a factor for many. Many gamers have simply had enough of it. The phrase “battle pass” came out a lot and not in a good way. ‘memeslich’ took it hard: “Battle passes suck. When the little guy announced the phone game he spoke about how much they hated predatory phone games.” Mellow, humorless irony is the most appropriate way to characterize that reference to Todd Howard’s earlier remarks. ‘PorqueQuince’ responded with a humorous reaction GIF of someone literally fighting himself, labeling it as a response from “someone who’s battling the FOMO in Fallout 76’s battle passes.” The fear of missing out is indeed very real and it looks like Bethesda is spreading it across most of their titles. ‘OGCyclophile’ inquired, “Now you’re ruining that game with seasons?” To which ‘FacemeltLoon’ offered some sarcastic yet wise advice: “Remember kids, the best way to avoid getting trapped in an unhealthy cycle of FOMO is to just choose not to get invested.” That is very good advice from the wasteland!
Moreover, the pricing did not come across as favorable. ‘Julian_wolf_tv’ posted a screenshot displaying in-game purchases ranging from $10-$20 and remarked, “$10-$20 for any of the decent new stuff is crazy.” It may be the case that certain items included in the season can be regarded as premium purchases and feeling a bit overpriced, but this is certainly a free-to-play game. But not so fast! The drama has not yet come to an end, stay tuned!
