The gaming world, especially Fall Guys, can be a mystery sometimes. Players were thrilled, and the biggest community spectacle of the season was communication problems between the studio and the players which had developed over months. Meanwhile, Mediatonic launched its seasonal update with costumes and mini-games, and nobody really noticed.
Now what about this new pass? The tweet from the official Fall Guys account was just a pictorial invitation to “bundle up” with the Arctic Adventures Fame Pass along with a linking and a snowflake emoji. Usually, this would be the reason to cheer – new materials meant that the players could dress in different styles, some icy areas could be created, and the game would experience a seasonal refresh which is very common and quite keeping the game alive. But comments are telling a very different story wherein it has been bubbling up for months at the very least.
Fallout was not so much celebrated, and mixed would be the best word to characterize it. There’s a segment of the players that seems to be quite delighted with the new stuff. User X_Leon_05 commented, “Best pass we had in a while,” while Olga Gacha Phoenix called the costumes “cute!” and Martin Vazquez expressed his gratitude to the game designers for the “amazing update.” So, the content of the pass does not seem too bad in reality right? But then you read on and then it is really hard to describe.
Actually, the situation can be totally opposite from how the new pass looks; it is actually what the players are calling a complete communication blackout of the Fall Guys team. User RealDogeMaster was reminding everyone that “56 days” have passed since anything important was communicated about the game’s future and that “We are just asking for the bare minimum. We are not even asking for huge updates; we just want the slightest communication.” That’s indeed a long time to be in the dark about your favorite game’s direction.
A lot of comments reflect what seems to be a significant concern over the game’s development status. User Manu Gaming IT bluntly told the developers to “declare EOS instead and leave it at that,” where EOS likely means “end of service” – indicating that the game might be getting shut down. Another user Mome echoed this opinion, saying the team should “acknowledge it, the game is dead.” That’s quite a harsh critique for a game that enjoyed such high popularity during the pandemic.
Furthermore, complaints are detailed rather than vague. Their discussions are not only filled with the usual “game bad” comments – players are actually questioning some unavailability of things like Creative content, new music, UI changes, and even something as simple as a gameplay trailer for the new pass. User CubicallyCubey asked, “Not even a gameplay trailer? Just… Nothing??” which suggests that the announcement was somehow lacking in info.
The discontent is seen as a direct result of what players perceive as the company’s silencing of the game’s roadmap and future plans. User MinetoCDDA lamented “How about you guys post a new roadmap, or even just another post stating the future plans for the game?” while Banana222 imagined himself dying in a neglected state and commented “the only thing getting cold is my dead body. I will die of neglect and starvation.” That’s some next-level dramatic language right there, but it still reflects the fervor of this community even if it is concerned.
Even the positive comments can’t overpower this underlying tension. One user called it the “best pass we had in a while,” and another quickly asked “Which isn’t saying much” – ouch. Players’ expectations are obvious: transparency is their top priority. They don’t even have to be asking for huge content drops, just a clear message that the game has a future beyond these seasonal passes.
Chris Chiu’s all-caps rant about the missing trailer really symbolizes the frustration: “WHERE THE HELL IS THE TRAILER?! DON’T TELL ME SUCH A SIMPLE THING THAT COST NO MONEY AT ALL AND YOU STILL CAN’T DO IT?!” When the players are getting this animated about what should be the most minimum of promotional materials, it is clear that there is a much deeper issue.
Of all things, the weirdest one is that we are still talking about Fall Guys – the cartoon beans battle royale that totally took the streaming market by storm for months. The creator of the video making jumping jelly beans a must-see show. Now, the gamers are afraid that the… game is on life support? That’s a very dramatic change for a game that not too long ago felt unbeatable.
This case is puzzling even more because of the fact that the developers haven’t stopped releasing content – for example, the Arctic Adventures pass is a pretty strong evidence for that. But no communication regarding the big picture at all has put this odd situation where new content releases appear to be tokens rather than real updates. It’s like receiving a gift but not knowing if there will be any PlayStation or Xbox support in the future.
