Edi Gathegi’s opinion of Mister Terrific in the new Superman film caused a frenzy of opinions—and quite a lot of positive feedback at that. This character set apart the film, which was criticized by some, into a debate about spin-offs and whether the character was, in fact, overshadowing Superman himself.
So who is Mister Terrific, and why are we seeing an outbreak of interest now? The actor Gathegi plays this Michael Holt, Gentleman Scientist and Combat Expert, alongside the supporting cast in the movie. But, in the eyes of this fan base, he might as well have been the lead.
One fan on Twitter said, “Best supporting character other than Louis. Would love to see more of his character in future movies,” while another stated plainly, “Best part of the movie.” Praise was pouring in inexorably, with some going so far as to compare Gathegi’s work as being “more terrific than any MCU character.” What a huge compliment from within the camp where Marvel reigns worldwide in its cinematic universe.
Though some were rightfully avert, some regarded this character as “a little corny,” while yet another view declared that he “wasn’t charming or funny at all.” These real minority voices, though. Most of the opinions were heavy hammer blows of admiration with, “He was awesome! I want a TV show with him!” and “VIP of the film.”
The debate further got interesting as some started contemplating whether Mister Terrific was included because of a diversity mandate. One sarcastic reply was “Yeah, hiring a black guy to play a black guy definitely qualifies as a diversity mandate.” Ouch.
Immediately following the character’s reception, Gathegi’s career path has also been the topic. One fan commented with, “This actor should have been far greater in movie career by now, but they always used him as a cameo for bad movies all the time.” It’s a fair point to bring up since Gathegi has been around for a while, mainly doing smaller roles. Will Mister Terrific be the breakthrough?
Now, about the T-Spheres. For those that don’t know, Mister Terrific’s extravagant gadgets are basically floating, high-tech orbs that assist him with fighting. One gamer said, “The spheres are wearing speedos and nothing can make me unsee it.” The conversation took a serious tone when one user started arguing back and forth about whether they should be called “spheres” or “circles.” (Spoiler alert: spheres are 3D; circles are flat. How about that!)
With the character receiving so much love, it hardly comes as any surprise that the gamers are already begging for more. Spin-off series? Solo movie? That’s an opportunity DC should seize while it’s hot. Until that moment, the one thing that sure is, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific is going to be a long-lasting memory for people.
Where to next for the character? Time will tell in good time, but if all the online chatter is anything to go by, gamers won’t be satisfiable without seeing more of him. And frankly? Same.
