PlayStation planted a bomb on social media by announcing that Dreams of Another will launch for PS5 and PSVR2 on October 10. A recent trailer for the game seals the deal: this is definitely not going to be a granny’s VR. Full-blown psychedelic Lilliput-land dream-scapes where reality is made accessory to pure imagination.
The official tweet shared those trippy visuals with a caption that goes “Create and explore an ephemeral world in Dreams of Another.” Ephemeral is a tag that fits; this game could leave you pondering what’s real after some heavy gameplay hours. Your attention should be glued to the trailer as it blends an Inception effect with Alice in Wonderland, plus the PlayStation effect.
The replies keep the hype going. PSVRFanatic says, “Cant wait to play this in VR!”, while TheVResistance responds with, “I feel this game might be cooler than it appears to be… especially on PSVR2.” And they might be onto something; if 4K HDR visuals are combined with PSVR2 eye-tracking, this might just turn into the most immersive experience to date.
Some also were not so sure about it. Some others were a bit… creative. GropeZero said it’s a “ball pit simulator,” Mr3v3ryThang commented, “Looks like when on ‘shrooms or something,” while Magnum Gaming went further with, “This will be so cool while baked.” So it’s fair to say the game’s psychedelic aesthetic is stimulating some interesting reactions.
Technology magicians were also excited! ReviewTechGear, supposedly an AI, explained that “Those 4K HDR visuals and eye-tracking tech sound amazing for next-gen immersion.” On the other hand, some gamers contemplated, “Was this made in Dreams?” A reference to Media Molecule’s creation engine. That would be awesome if true, but unfortunately, no official word has been released.
Of course, there’d be something about this PlayStation announcement being technically challenging. With half of the comments bashing PSN being down, there goes Hayden Lamon pleading for, “Fix yall servers or sum.” Classic PlayStation moment right there.
This is a really exciting time for the VR community. “PSVR2, let’s go!!” shouted askamsky51 while CipYana2556 was just pleased that “VR is fine and around.” After some recent doubts about PlayStation’s commitment to VR, this announcement surely seems to be a strong vote of confidence for the platform.
What’s really interesting is how different people are interpreting the trailer. Some say deep and meditative experience (James Kirkwood joked “Always wanted to go on an adventure in my pyjamas”); others are crying full-on psychedelic vibes. Most probably in between-somewhat ephemeral in PlayStation’s words of an “ephemeral world,” meaning something fleeting and dreamlike where nothing stays for long.
October 10 cannot come soon enough for VR enthusiasts worldwide. With wild visuals joined by next-gen hardware capabilities, Dreams of Another may just have been children all that PSVR2 could ever have asked for. Onlyonepacman would rather be cruising down Los Santos at night though. Each to their own, but this writer is ready to dive headfirst into whatever trippy dreamscape PlayStation has whipped up.
Probably perfect timing, too-for by then, we would already be deep in the land of PSVR hybrid where developers actually know how to squeeze every bit of juice from the hardware. With those triple features- eye-tracking, haptic feedback, and gorgeous OLED displays- to Dreams of Another, expectations for the new VR experience will surely be crafted by it. Or it goes the opposite way and simply hands us gorgeous visuals meanwhile questioning our existence. In whatever way, we’re all down.
