Bethesda surprised DOOM fans with one free item- a free Butcher Skin for DOOM: The Dark Ages during the signing up. It was a stellar explosion of 20K likes in just a couple of hours, and the replies: the DOOM community had pretty sharp thoughts.
The deal: Go to the official DOOM tweet portal, click on the link – join, and continue to enjoy this dope medieval-looking Butcher Skin for free. Limited time only; sculpting an anti-Christ-eye for Bethesda by the players. “There literally is no reason to make it limited,” argues @The_Aeramis, along with many others behind their viewpoint of FOMO tactics.
Now a little spicy. Right now, there seem to be three loud camps in the DOOM fanbase:
1. The Camp That Asks: “Why Skins in an FPS?”
Several replies like @MikeyThomp35589’s asked, “It’s a first person game what’s the point of skins?” and @IIIIIlllIlIIllI likened it to “useless $20 Barbie outfits on Call of Duty.” A good point indeed! You barely ever see your character in DOOM. Then, @BOoTHyBOy198 throws in that concept art of hybrid armor design for a “looked cool as fuck,” thus showing some players dig all cosmetic stuff.
2. Those That Hate the Bethesda Account
@rhinozip2 sums it up: “yeah its free but you have to sell your soul to bethesda first.” Oof. The signup requirement is pissing a lot of people off, especially as @NaturalHyper complains about Bethesda’s “incompetent website” keeping him from getting verified for that skin. Then, @BigStankDad1963 started telling people to just mod them in instead-another flame war started immediately on what is the “correct way” to obtain cosmetics.
3. Gimme Better Skins
Several replies criticized the selection of the skin as being inferior to those of DOOM Eternal. @Sonnie_Slim complained, “just recolors is pretty disappointing,” about Dark Ages, while @TrudyNord begged for a no-helmet option. @BOoTHyBOy198 went down memory lane, referring to “classic skin, sentinel skin, and my personal favorite, the 2016 armor skin” from Eternal. Those are feelings!
Extra Drama:
– @ALeonOriginal just wants the removal of Denuvo (relatable)
– @rodrisanbaga demands fixes for HDR on PS5 Pro
– @Rai__YT wonders about the existence of the Switch 2 port
– And then, @RevTerryRice randomly wants to know about “that pizza place and energy drink ones,” as if he’s putting in an order for lunch.
The weirdest part is that all this skin debate is happening alongside glorifying the OST being called “thiiiiiick,” with three extras on the “i”, by @a2okat8. Priorities, people!
All in all, a freebie is a freebie. @Gro3_ puts it as “great way to reward your community and drive sign-ups.” But the DOOM crowd being DOOM fans will never be able to put their entire heart into it. Now, whether you’re here for the cosmetics or here to rip ‘n’ tear, clear as daylight is that the Dark Ages hype train has no brakes even if some of its passengers are distracted with arguing over armor textures instead of having fun.
