This is very initial, and even melting happens at freezing point. All set; if the plan goes by the way it had to, a new game would be coming quicker than Chapel-Six could take the Hoodlum Speed to accuse it. Industry insider Tom Henderson dropped the fact that Eidos Montreal had pitched plans for a new game of Deus Ex: right, you’ve read it correctly.
Years of being hushed-up and an extensive collection of memes asking for a sequel to “please give us more Adam Jensen”; it appears, now, that the popular stealth-action cyberpunk series is finally about to rise again.
Okay before you scream “AT LAST” into the cosmic void, pump the brakes a little bit. A pitch does not automatically mean greenlight. Studios pitch all sorts of things that never see the light of day. But given how gilt-edged Deus Ex is- especially Human Revolution and Mankind Divided-it’d be kinda wild if Square Enix didn’t at least consider it.
For those who missed out: Eidos Montreal is the studio that made the last two Deus Ex games and is currently busy doing other things (like developing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy)-but now that they are done with that, it makes sense that they would want to revisit their cyberpunk shoot.
Plus, who at this time isn’t psyched to have more of that-to illustrate, totally the aesthetic these days (thank you very much Cyberpunk 2077 and its multiple wannabe Blade Runner movies)-that makes the timing seem… suspiciously perfect.
What would a new Deus Ex even look like? A direct sequel to Mankind Divided? Soft reboot? A prequel where we play as a young Bob Page scheming his way into Illuminati domination? (Okay, maybe that last one’s just me dreaming.)
And let’s not forget that Mankind Divided left unfinished, hanging on a huge cliff. Unresolved at Adam Jensen’s “walking into the sunset with a million unanswered questions” levels. The fans are burning for some resolution, and if this pitch turns out really into-game, well, then we might get one at last.
All just theoretical stuff at the moment. No release window, no platforms, not even so much as a hint that glorious Adam Jensen’s voice is going to return. But hey, the fact Eidos would even be thinking this way about Deus Ex is a win, anyway.
What do you think? Would you like to go back to the world of augs, of conspiracies, and morally ambiguous choices? Or are you still recovering from the launch of Cyberpunk 2077? In either case, cross those cybernetic fingers because this could be something official less time than seemed possible at first.
