The last Trials of Osiris for the year is happening in Destiny 2 this weekend, and it will be on the Javelin-4 map with the Auric Disabler as the weapon of the weekend. But the community’s reaction has been, well, let’s just say it’s a mixed bag.
Destiny’s official account announced the Trials event and players could not hold their horses any longer, replying and sharing emotions – ranging from happiness to absolutely furious. Apparently, the community cannot figure out if they still like or loathe the game mode. And truthfully? The two factions have strong cases.
So, what exactly is Trials of Osiris? For the newcomers to Destiny 2, it is the premier PvP activity in which players engage in 3v3 elimination matches. If you manage to go flawless – win seven matches in a row – you get to visit the Lighthouse for loot. This weekend’s featured gun is the Auric Disabler – an auto rifle that is loved by some and that raises the question of why we are given yet another AR among others.
Nevertheless, the real situation is revealed in the comments on Bungie’s Twitter feed. Gamers like ZayOsirisGaming are on one side that is ecstatic and sharing, “It cooks 🔥” with a video of the weapon. Contrarily, there are players like Revjerryo who are saying “Your game is nothing but cheaters now. It will be completely dead soon. Great job losers.” Yikes!
The cheating accusations are rampant in the comments. Bad_Karma______ replied to a user who was excited about the Trials to say, “Enjoy the cheaters who are the only ones playing 😂” and honestly? That is tough because it has some truth in it. The issues with player counts are real – vivecshand34 quipped about “All 17 people still playing trials are pumped im sure” and although that is an obvious overstatement, player numbers have been a struggle lately.
But wait, what was I saying – oh right, the actual gameplay. The Javelin-4 map that looks like a circular Mercury map with a central area and multilayered buildings is this one. It is actually a decent Trials map because it forces the players to engage both in close and long-range combat. The Auric Disabler is… well, it is an auto rifle. Some players are excited about possible god rolls, such as chadPOLE_ saying, “Need me that Shiny PvE roll 🥰,” while others like Azen1895 are saying, “I have so many of those AR’s already I don’t need anymore!”
The demands are still a problem as well. Nathan_W7 made a great remark: “Isn’t it time to take trials off being locked behind a DLC paywall, the population is at an all-time low and EoF hold no value for money.” And he is right – it is not smart to lock the competitive modes behind paywalls when the population is already struggling.
There are also matchmaking problems. jtizzle4477 replied to a user about being able to find consistent teams with “yeah until you play 7 all hunter 3 stacks in a row cuz you won 2 games” which is pretty much, that’s the Trials experience for you. The skill level rises fast when the population decreases – you either get complete newbies or absolute pros, and there’s no middle ground.
However, there are still players who are having fun even amidst all the negativity. AKHNATUN7 said, “Idk why but I’m still enjoying the game, despite its bad state..🤷♂️ (if they stop nerfing everything)” and roxiierpg shared some love with “don’t listen to the haters sweetie i’ll log on for that ar and armor <3.”
The whole saga of Salvo_Gnochi trying to gain attention for some issue and arguing in the comments is just, the ultimate Destiny community drama. It’s a chaotic but also kind of amusing thing to witness if you’re just a bystander watching people get worked up over Xbox messages and bringing up personal stuff.
So, what’s the takeaway for Trials? There are clearly still players who love the game mode but then again, if Bungie wants the mode to thrive, they need to tackle the cheating and player count issue at the same time. With a challenger like Battlefield 6 stealing gamers, it is paramount for them to listen to what the community has to say. Gunfights in Destiny 2 are still considered one of the best in the industry – hence the gamers’ loyalty despite the frustrations. But how long will gunplay that is good be able to carry a mode that is so bogged down with other problems?
If you are thinking of playing Trials this weekend, then I wish you luck. Watch out for those Hunter stacks, pray that you don’t encounter any cheaters, and who knows, you might just get that perfect Auric Disabler roll. Or perhaps you will get frustrated and give up, switching to Battlefield 6 like half the replies are suggesting doing. Either way, it is yet another weekend in the Destiny 2 world – loving or hating it, it is never boring.
