So, Bungie just dropped this tweet. Suddenly there is so much buzz about it. It actually tells people to link their accounts on Bungie and Twitch and then watch the developer walkthrough stream for the full 15 minutes on the upcoming Tuesday to receive the new emblem called the Knights of Old. And the provided image? Gee, if that doesn’t just reach back into my memory of…
For starters, let’s devote some time towards figuring out adequately what this thing is. In other words, it’s a Twitch drop of some kind. You link your accounts together, watch the stream, and receive some snazzy cosmetics for free. This time it is an emblem. But it is no ordinary emblem- it is called Knights of Old. The image in the promotional piece looks very much like a lightsaber. There is something suspiciously Mandalorian about that armor as well.
The replies everything shoots off the roof. One big community account, Destiny Bulletin, was one of the first to point this out: “is that…a Lightsaber? Mando armor? Emblem called ‘Knights of Old’…hmm.” And so the vibe was set. The players are at fever pitch at the suggestion of any potential Star Wars co-op. One user, Aaron Caldwell, commented, “Nice another new Emblem i dont own and its Star Wars Hell Yeah ill be there first thing.” The hype is real.
But there is more behind this hype; after all, this is the Destiny community. There is always some salt thrown in. SB just gave a classic salty reply: “Not being fooled by this again.” Fair few; we’ve been burned before: by cool-looking promos. And in its usual manner, this just snowballed into more demands and complaints. One guy, Kaden, said to “bring the legend of acrius catalyst out of sunseted content PLEASE.” From that point on, Lucy aka KiwiiPiwii went on a rant about cheaters in Crucible: “Can you please fix your anti cheat and get rid of all the cheaters already I rrfuse to redownload Destiny and play until that’s fixed.” Classic Destiny Twitter.
But the theories are going strong, The name “Knights of Old” with the sight of a dark, sleek sword and armor has minds going one way: Knights of the Old Republic. Or maybe The Mandalorian. Or just Star Wars in general. Someone even uttered those two words “Knights of the Old Republic” in a reply. It’s the only thing that makes sense. Bungie has done collabs before, and a Star Wars one? That would be huge. Like, monumentally huge.
And then there’s the timing. The livestream’s next Tuesday, which probably marks the official reveal for this entire shebang. Just a cool Star Wars-inspired emblem? Or a tease for a real, in-game collab? Come on. Imagine a Ghost that looks like BB-8. Or a sparrow that is just a landspeeder in disguise. A class item that is actually a Jedi robe. The possibilities are endless, and the players in these replies are already dreaming about it.
Oh, where was I? Oh yes, the livestream. So if you want this emblem, whatever it turns out to be, you need to link your Bungie and Twitch accounts, tune into the official Destiny Twitch channel next Tuesday, and let it run in the background for at least 15 minutes. Even if you will not be watching, have it going on in the background for free loot. Free loot gets me almost every time, especially if it is going to be a prelude to something huge.
The community response is a strange mix of hype, skepticism, and outright demands that all else be fixed immediately. That is so Destiny. One minute they’re fleshing out theories for the mother of all pop culture crossovers, and the next, they’re in full rant mode about catalyst availability and PvP cheaters. A beautiful kind of chaos.
Time will tell if this is actually a Star Wars project or whether Bungie is just in stitches watching everybody burn over a sassy name and look. What thrusts it almost into the previous category, though, is the weight of evidence. The name, the imagery…tied back to one of the biggest franchises ever. If that holds, then Destiny 2 would suddenly get very interesting. But if not, well, someone’s going to be really pissed, I assure you. But that is for later. The rumor mill is running at full steam now. Get those accounts linked and ready for Tuesday. This is going to be worth it.
