So yeah, Numskull Designs has come up with something Destiny insiders have low-key been lusting after since… forever? Can you believe? A freaking Golgoroth Plush. That big nasty Hive fellow from King’s Fall, who spits nasty goo on you? Now it is ready for hugs. Honestly, the gamer reactions are mixed between utter hype and utter confusion.
In the official tweet, the company showcases this hilariously adorable version of the boss and says, “From the depths of the Dreadnaught… Meet the Golgoroth Plush! This Hive monster is now huggable, horrifying, and a must-have for every Guardian.” Then, of course, they provide the link and instructions for ordering the plush. But the comments are where the story is told. It has been interesting watching gamers go berserk, but in the utmost way.
First, some are basically cool with it all. Lrbearclaw stated, “My gf has been wanting this for 9 years… and I said ‘At this point, it will never happen.’ Today, you made me a liar.” That is honestly such a mood?? Destiny merch has always kind of been hit or miss but this has to be such a deep cut into the game’s history. King’s Fall was originally in D1, and then got ported back to D2, so that boss has basically been kicking around for a long time.
And then there’s the other side of the coin, with players saying… why this?? Why not something else?? User hlwnspice said, “Anything but Rhulk with you guys ffs,” and it’s a really good point because Rhulk is from Vow of the Disciple, and merch has been requested ever since. And sarahnivans added, “Where is Rhulk? Where is Nezarec? I also was promised a Crow ducky. My heart is broken Numskull. ππ₯,” so like… there’s demand for other characters, but Golgoroth first?? Interesting choice.
Then it goes into design critiques. Angelicoir says, “Manβ¦idk why but the design looks off to me lol Does this one glow in the dark on his booger back?? π” and that is a decent point for in-game Golgoroth has glowing pustules on his back that you have to shoot. So if the plush doesn’t glow?? Missed opportunity honestly.
Naturally, there are some raid reference comments: victorialp1982 simply commented, “Who got gaze!!!” referring to an actual raid mechanic where someone holds Golgoroth’s gaze while everyone else damages him. The community is quickly connecting it to gameplay: awesome.
Oh yeah, wait, what was I saying? Oh yeah, the mixed reactions. Some think it’s cool, others think it’s weird, and some are confused as to why this particular enemy was chosen. XenoSynthesis pleaded, “PLEASE, for the love of The Traveler, do a Vex Harpy next! We have been begging for YEARS…” and yes, the Vex definitely need more merch support.
Then there is this whole other side conversation about the mittens?? SarahJenea said, “The mittens @ChainsV4V π₯,” to which Chains replied, “GOLGY!!! The mittens! I love him π.” So the plush comes with little mittens?? Which is simultaneously adorable and horrifying for a Hive monster.
Pricing isn’t mentioned in the tweets, but judging by Numskull’s past Destiny merch, it’d probably be around $30-50, not bad for a good-sized plush. Especially for such a niche enemy from the game.
What I find really interesting is that it depicts a schism within the Destiny community between players who want merch for obscure deep cuts versus the more mainstream characters. Everybody wants Saints-14 or Cayde-6 merch, but Golgoroth?? Those are some deep cuts. But it sort of makes sense since King’s Fall is a very highly regarded Destiny raid.
Speaking of timing, The Final Shape expansion is so close, too. Could this be one of a large merch push from Bungie and Numskull? I would in no way be surprised if they threw down for more raid-boss plushes in the future. Oryx would look sick, honestly.
But yeah, the general vibe is that folks are excited but are confused about the choice. Also, they’re begging for others in perpetuity. Destiny community knows what it wants, and it really knows how to ask for it.
So, if you are a Destiny fan who has always wanted to hug that giant Hive thing that wiped your entire raid team multiple times?? Your chance is here. Just don’t expect it to glow in the dark or have booger physics. It’s just a plush, not a replication.
And who knows, maybe if this sells well, we’ll finally get that Rhulk statue everybody’s been begging for. Or Vex Harpy. Or pretty much any other character from the game. There definitely is demand judging by the comments.
Anyway, here’s the link to Numskull’s site if you want to order one. Be warned; your non-Destiny-playing friends will be very confused about why you’re cuddling a monster with mittens.
