Bungie has dropped the hype trailer and the countdown is about to end. Today is the day when Destiny 2‘s the ‘Renegades’ expansion drops. No more waiting, no more hints. It’s time to get to the action. What’s the main point? The Drifter, our favorite dark and mysterious uncle, looks like he has gone through and survived a cosmic woodchipper. The tweet quote states, ‘I was sent to tackle him. It has to be me!’ Heavy stuff, isn’t it? This isn’t the typical ‘power of friendship’ plot and some players are even hoping it doesn’t happen.
What about Renegades? The launch day is tomorrow. However, the real story, as always, comes out in the comments section. Players have started to prepare for a catastrophe even before. One user by the name of FrustratedGame4 summed up the general fear of gamers perfectly by saying, ‘When you say tomorrow do you mean the next day after…because we all know that the servers will be totally broken or something wrong will occur at the launch 😂’. It’s like a custom! Standing in queue on the launch day is similar to a rite of passage for the players. Another guardian, RebornInLight, pleaded, ‘Please don’t make me wait in a queue on day one 😭🙏. Someone else gave a funny reply, ‘I bless you with 3 hours of queue’. Look, the community is already showing its best side.
Let’s move on to Drifter now. His new, fatigued look has caused a massive reaction. This guy has seen it all. The gamer melatoninmotte commented, ‘is that drifter? been out of the game for a few years, but he has definitely aged worse than I have. And I don’t even have a ghost.’ Ouch. So it’s a mix of worry and excitement.
Once again the plot seems to be the main attraction for the gamers. Player abdu__witcher, didn’t beat around the bush when he declared, ‘the only thing I’m excited about in this DLC is the story. Alison Lührs is one of the few at Bungie that I trust’. That name-drop is quite targeted and it’s clear that the players are being vigilant to who is bringing forth the narrative. It not only raises the hope of something more than new weapons and activities but also a story that hits hard especially with Drifter at the forefront looking so defeated.
Nonetheless the practical concerns still exist. Fsociety511 was curious to know whether D2 would be pausing for a day due to Renegades? Maintenance is unavoidable but players just want to know when is the best time for them to do their last-minute grinding. Others, like TriiGz, are already thinking about the new gear and just saying, ‘I NEED THE LIGHTSABER ASAP’. Got to get that new look!
It’s funny that despite the chaos, one person made a very clever comment about aging in the Destiny universe. FIERCEDEGAMER joked, ‘Drifter has aged three months more than Eva Levante has in all the years of events in Destiny 2’. Absolutely spot on! Eva is always perfect, and Drifter looking like he is going to die after a weekend’s battle. The graphic narration isn’t just a nice-to-have; it is actually a must-have!
So, what’s the final thought? Destiny 2: Renegades is knocking on the door. It’s going to tell a dark, personal story of Drifter who seems to be carrying the burden of the entire universe. Players are absolutely thrilled with the story arc, and at the same time, they are scared of the server queues on the launch day. They have the same attitude of mocking and at the same time defending their favorite rogue Lightbearer. The mix of excitement and weariness is typical of the Destiny community. Tomorrow we all will be logging in together (or waiting in line to log in) to find out what exactly ‘dealing with him’ means. The adventure is about to begin whether that be a lightsaber, a sorrow-soaked story or just an incredible new activity that we all want to grind.
