Bungie’s tweet about the new “bonus focus” event in Destiny 2 has sparked a fresh wave of anger within the community. The tweet has received a lot of negative responses and the general tone in which these negative responses have been written makes it sound like there is a bug in the loot system. Bungie announced via the official Destiny 2 Twitter that players will have a chance to get a second drop from Bonus Focus activities in the Portal this week. Rather than easing, player frustration instead seems to have increased with this announcement.
From the beginning, everyone tries to understand the situation. Everyone tries to understand the situation, and Alienietzsche’s comment “What does this even mean?” summarizes the confusion everyone feels. The phrasing is so confusing that even long-standing community members try to understand it. It almost seems like Bungie attempting to use some confusing business language that has no direct relation to the game.
After content creator RickKackis’s comment about the event being underwhelming, the drama escalates. The responses to his comment are spectacular, with one participant, Killer_Clown4191, complaining about “Bungie im getting tired of this woke shit.” Oddly, he also adds “It’s Pissing me OFF” and no one knows how “woke” relates to loot drops. Another user, Nick, immediately responds, “How is that woke? What the fuck are you talking about lol,” and honestly, that’s the perfect response we all should hear.
The general outlook is that people are… bored? HellyJamson’s comment “I’m bored at this point” seems to convey some deep exhaustion. Having just had the Solstice loot shower, the move towards single additional drops feels like a step back. Players are stating how not too long ago we had double loot GMs and an insane amount of loot from lighthouse chests, and now we are getting “this.”
The comment from Josh sums up the community’s anger quite well: “These bonuses and events are whack. Bungie is afraid of giving loot out nowadays.” While that is true, I can’t recall another situation where I have agreed with a statement so quickly. Along with many others, I suspect that the “Final Shape” loot shower is what’s led to this “you’re not going to get anything for a long time” shake, in the opposite direction, as I like to call it. Why can’t loot feel rewarding? I wish it did.
The outcry is not limited to the loot, though. The crashes and the update are topics of discussion for Aaron, saying the game crashes every time he tries to load anything by the Crucible. Then there is Raijinmeister, who shared a story about dealing 7 damage against a barrier champ with a T5 weapon and uninstalling the game immediately. That is extreme frustration, and I mean next-level.
Anthony highlights the petition for Quad Squads in PVE activities, which sounds pretty awesome, right? Instead of these useless bonus events that no one wants, maybe Bungie should focus on these ideas.
What really stands out is the number of players who are simply done. “I’m good. Where is the actual new content at?” DredgenShinobi asks. Rich Coast Roller comments, “this game feels horrid and dead,” less than three months before The Final Shape is released. That is really terrible for Bungie.
The change is unbelievable. People were looking forward to the Final Shape announcement, but now it’s this boring vibe. Instead of playing the event, many players are asking for Solstice to return for one more week. This event was clearly not well received, and it couldn’t be clearer.
In the end, the players of Destiny want to feel adequately rewarded for their time for the game, which is something that every player wants. The expectation is to launch the game, participate in the game activities, and amass loot. Is it really that simple to expect? Bungie seems very distant from what the players want. There is still hope, though, that it’s not late and the right measures are taken, especially with The Final Shape launch.
