CD Projekt Red, the developers behind the beloved Witcher franchise and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, have confirmed that, while their newest title will come to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, it won’t be available for next-gen consoles when they launch during the holiday season.
During a recent earnings call, Michał Nowakowski, who is the SVP of business development at CD Projekt Red, said that a full-blown next-generation release will come later and that as of right now, he has nothing more to add about the game coming to the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5.
Back in February, the Poland-based video game developers confirmed that anyone who buys the Xbox One version of Cyberpunk 2077 will be able to upgrade to the Series X version at no additional cost. But, they haven’t announced anything regarding the PlayStation 5 version, and in a statement issued to Video Games Chronicle, CDPR clarified that the “full-blown next-generation” that Nowakowski talked about during the aforementioned earnings call was about the Xbox Series X port, as they’re waiting on Sony to announce what’s going to happen with the PlayStation 5 version.
“There’s no official announcement coming from PlayStation so we really can’t confirm or deny anything,” said Nowakowski. “It’s PlayStation that first needs to address these issues and then we’re happy to make a comment, but we can’t jump the gun ahead of them.”
Originally, Cyberpunk 2077 was supposed to be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC later this week, but CDPR felt like they needed more time to polish their upcoming open-world, first-person shooter. Since announcing the delay, the developers have said publicly that they’re confident that they’ll be able to meet the game’s new release date, which is September 17.
Even though the developers are confident that they’ll be able to put the finishing touches on the current-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 before its scheduled release date, the next-gen versions may be pushed back. Of course, it’s also possible that the next-gen consoles themselves will be pushed back as well due to our current circumstances.
As of this writing, CD Projekt Red hasn’t even teased a release date for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of Cyberpunk 2077, and they’ll likely avoid doing so until the release dates for the two aforementioned next-gen consoles are set in stone. For now, though, it looks like the next-gen ports of CDPR’s newest title won’t arrive on the next-gen consoles until sometime in 2021.
