CD Projekt Red gave the players of Cyberpunk 2077 a really special treat on Friendship Day, applauding one of the most chaotic teams in gaming: V and Johnny. The Cyberpunk 2077 official Twitter tweeted about those friends that gave you “migraines, flashbacks, and life advice you never asked for.” Well, we all knew who they meant.
The tweet had a picture of male V and Johnny in some shadowing pose that screamed “bromance gone awry”-Johnny, with a smirk, and poor V, with a look that read, “I am one really bad decision away from regretting everything.” And please, bear with me, because that’s the entire dynamic in the shortest nutshell ever. The comment section was flooding with laughter about how true it was or people begging CDPR to put that pose into the game.
One player, Rapha, joked about Johnny’s iconic line: V, you…! which is pretty much the exasperation of their relationship. Another player, deCode, immediately answered with the ultimate comeback: Johnny! You son of a…! Only Cyberpunk fans would get appreciation for such an exchange, and it is pretty evident that years following the release, the story-based tie between these two still packs a punch.
Now, there were other folks that only weren’t there for the memes. Several took the chance to remind CDPR of current problems like the VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) issue on Xbox Series consoles. Others then segued into demanding New Game Plus (come on, where is it?), followed by a few going outright-for V to Fortnite now. Because why not?
The interesting thing about this is that from this post, male V seemed to be getting all the glory. While for some time, female V has been the face of much of Cyberpunk’s marketing, and even more so since the launch of Phantom Liberty, there were genuinely excited fans seeing male V back in front again. One user said, “Look who remembered Male V exists,” and another replied, “It’s nice to see male V again.”
Then there are those who definitely are not happy. One critically unleashed her salty feelings about CDPR’s character creation, saying that V “definitely isn’t Jewish,” which is… okay? Meanwhile, the other one went on an unrelated rant, calling the game a “Souls-clone” (???), really showing that whatever CDPR does, someone’s always got to throw some shade.
And back to the point—to messy but deep love letters to the messy and complicated friendship of Johnny and V. In either a male or female V, the messed-up dynamic was indeed one of the good things in the whole game. Everybody seems to acknowledge this with moments like this coming from CDPR.
Hence, happy chaotic Friendship Day to a duo who have made us laugh, scream, and sometimes within seconds want to throw our controllers. Hopefully, we will see that pose in-game very soon-along with the official New Game Plus to reinitiate the fun.
Until then, dear chooms, wear the Johnny Silverhand flair-with some courtesy on taking his advice.
